Chapter 23
But even if this is a rebirth story, the point of rebirth is still a long way off. Right now, it’s only early summer, whereas the original story began in early winter. So it’s not that he’s being unreasonable; the script he has to work with is already incredibly sparse, and the time leading up to the start of the story is even less detailed. When he first arrived, he wondered if his wife’s rebirth had been accelerated, but that suspicion was quickly dismissed.
Firstly, the recent events, such as the breaking off of the engagement, deviated significantly from the original rebirth plot. Secondly, the system, though not much help with the plot, could at least monitor the timeline and his wife’s soul. According to the system’s explanation, if she had truly been reborn, her soul would have a ghostly quality, since it would be her soul from the first timeline returning to a past moment in her life. It was as if her wife’s current soul would have been displaced by her soul from the first timeline—a strange but logical concept.
As it stood, her soul was still that of the first timeline, so the idea of an early rebirth was dismissed.
But still, if the plot was falling apart, it wasn’t his fault!
Expecting him, a grown man, to navigate the plot of a women’s novel based on guesses—he’d done his best to get this far!
(System: Look on the bright side, host. Sure, we got stuck with the villainous script, but at least you’re a male supporting character and not a female one, right?)
[Where’s the script?]
Where is it? He couldn’t see it anywhere!
(System: Well… if you were a villainous female character, some novels have that character end up with the male lead, the second male lead, or even the antagonist, right?)
[…You’re not actually answering my question!]
It’s like being stuck in a garbage dump and comparing which pile is better. The system was no help when it mattered, but it sure knew how to use its CPU to annoy him! Truly, a trash system!
If he had to compare it to the plot, he’d rather be Zhao Yuexi. At least she had more scenes in the original story than Luo Zhengyu! Easier to guess!
He’s nothing!
Suddenly, a commotion erupted upstairs, like someone was causing a ruckus. Though such incidents were rare, they weren’t unheard of. However, not just anyone could go up there, and no one would dare rush up without good reason.
[It worked!]
Luo Yu mentally shouted in excitement and then sprinted upstairs. He was so excited he was nearly in tears! Finally, something was going according to plan! He hoped the upcoming scenes with his wife would also proceed smoothly!
In just a few moments, he reached the upper floor, pushing the door open. Luo Yu almost wanted to cry—this scene was from the original story, where Princess Shangyang made her first appearance, a brief recollection with no internal monologues. Seeing it unfold just as described, he was truly moved!
The door opened to reveal a bright room, with large windows directly opposite the entrance. Luo Yu cleared his throat and quickly recited the lines he had practiced: “Yue’er, what happened?”
Even though he didn’t want to face Zhao Yuexi, the plot required that Luo Zhengyu be constantly glued to her.
Ugh, what a pair of scumbags!
Honestly, he didn’t quite understand this part of the plot. He couldn’t fathom why Luo Zhengyu thought Princess Shangyang would be willing to take in a disgraced girl who had run off with an engaged man as her companion. The result was that, by standing up for Zhao Yuexi, he embarrassed Princess Shangyang, which ultimately ruined her life.
[I really don’t want to do this…] Luo Yu was reluctant. If Princess Shangyang hadn’t experienced today’s events, her life would have been happy. But now he had to push her into a pit with his own hands.
(System: Host, don’t overthink it. Everything in this world is predetermined. This world is on the verge of plot collapse, and even if you try to change things, every character will still gravitate toward their original settings. Going in circles, they might just end up back where they started. Your efforts could be all for nothing.)
[I know.] Luo Yu understood this well. He was just a passerby and, in principle, shouldn’t interfere with anyone in this world.
On the other side of the door, Zhao Yuexi had a red handprint on her face. When she saw Luo Yu enter, she immediately called out to him and tried to hide behind him.
Princess Shangyang sat calmly, her expression indifferent, with a hint of displeasure as she looked at him. “Brother, what is the meaning of this? Storming in here like this—are you here to accuse me?”
Charging in angrily for the sake of a dishonorable orphaned girl, no wonder Princess Shangyang was upset. Luo Yu, inhabiting Luo Zhengyu’s body, couldn’t understand it either.
But understanding didn’t matter—he had no choice. He had to stand up for Zhao Yuexi, even if it meant making a fool of himself. “Sister, you’ve gone too far. Yue’er is alone and struggling in the capital. As a princess, you have everything you need, surrounded by servants. It’s just a small act of kindness, yet you’ve made it into a big issue, bullying her… What’s wrong with taking her as your companion? What harm does it do to you?”
As he spoke, he stumbled over the words, almost biting his tongue. His face flushed slightly as he struggled to keep his expression from betraying his embarrassment.
(System: So embarrassing, you tripped over your lines after rehearsing so many times.)
[Shut up! If you’re so good, why don’t you find an actor to play this role? I’m not a professional!]
Luo Yu really wanted to find a way to shut the system up permanently. What kind of system was so annoying? Always yapping!
“Brother, do you think just anyone can become a companion to the children of the royal family?” Princess Shangyang frowned. She had always had a poor relationship with this brother, who was so reckless in matters of love. “I am a legitimate daughter of the Empress. You want me to choose a girl with a tarnished reputation as my companion? Do you want people to think that I, a proper princess, prefer to associate with someone like that? If you don’t care about your reputation and want to disgrace yourself, don’t drag me down with you!”
Of course, Princess Shangyang was angry. Low birth status wasn’t necessarily a problem. If Zhao Yuexi were truly a helpless orphan, she might have felt pity for her and offered protection if she were in a good mood. But this woman had a ruined reputation! Princess Shangyang glared at Zhao Yuexi, completely baffled.
“My lord, please don’t quarrel with the princess because of me,” Zhao Yuexi said, her heart sinking. Pleasing others had become second nature to her, and she instinctively didn’t want to offend anyone. Seeing the two of them about to clash, she quickly stepped forward and curtsied. “It’s all my fault. I overstepped, thinking I could serve the princess when I should have known better.”
She stepped closer to Princess Shangyang and bowed, her face still bearing the handprint and tears welling up, making her look pitiful. But Princess Shangyang wasn’t about to let her off so easily.
“Overstepped?” Princess Shangyang sneered. “Shameless wretch. You’re a noblewoman, yet you’ve thrown all decency and propriety to the dogs. Clinging to a man and ruining his marriage—you’re no better than a common harlot. How dare you think I would allow you to stay by my side?”
