Chapter 60

She brought up this point at just the right time, leaving San Furen no room to refute. After all, if Ying Yiniang really had some incurable illness, even the brokers wouldn’t take her. Moreover, Jiang San Ye needed time to let go of his attachment to Ying Yiniang. San Furen wouldn’t openly oppose her husband and create discord between them.

“Ruohua makes a good point,” San Furen had no choice but to agree, instructing the family physician to take Ying Yiniang’s pulse.

The result almost made Jiang Ruohua burst out laughing.

“Reporting to the Third Master and Madam, Ying Yiniang… is just over a month pregnant. The fainting spell was likely caused by her recent fright.”

Well, isn’t this just perfect?

Standing silently to the side, Jiang Ruohua refrained from commenting. This wasn’t the sort of situation she needed to involve herself in.

As the obedient and dutiful niece, Jiang Ruohua gently supported the slightly unsteady San Furen and said, “Careful, Aunt.”

Realizing her momentary lapse, San Furen bit her lip lightly and composed herself before saying, “Husband, since Ying Yiniang is now carrying your child, I humbly suggest a minor punishment to teach her a lesson. This way, Madam Yuan can also feel assured as she continues to bear your child. What do you think?”

Upon hearing that Ying Yiniang was pregnant, Jiang San Ye couldn’t help but feel some delight. Still, Madam Yuan clung to his sleeve, clearly seeking reassurance. Since both women carried his children, both had to stay. He nodded in agreement with San Furen’s suggestion.

“You’re right, Madam. But as for the punishment, what do you think would be suitable?”

“This situation arose because of Ying Yiniang’s malicious intentions,” San Furen replied coldly. “To prevent her from repeating such an act, I suggest confining her to her courtyard indefinitely, forbidding her from stepping out. It serves as punishment for her wrongdoing and spares her life in consideration of the child she’s carrying. What does Master think?”

This could even be seen as a merciful act. Had Ying Yiniang been sold off, there was no telling where she might end up. She could forget about climbing into another prestigious household. No respectable family would take in a woman known for being cast out for misconduct, no matter how beautiful she was—it would only bring trouble.

Jiang Ruohua’s lips twitched into a slight smirk. Interesting. If Madam Yuan was currently safe, how might Ying Yiniang be leveraged?

Jiang San Ye considered the proposal and nodded. “Let’s do as you suggested, Madam.”

“As for the two maids involved in preparing the medicine,” San Furen continued icily, “daring to abet such vile deeds, they must be dragged out and beaten to death.”

Xiaoju was already too weak to struggle, but Xiaoxiang began sobbing and screaming in terror, begging for her life. Jiang Ruohua glanced at them and spoke at the right moment:

“Aunt, wait.”

The servants paused, awaiting further instructions. San Furen frowned as Jiang Ruohua explained, “Xiaoju, with her thieving hands and treacherous complicity, is beyond forgiveness and deserves death. But Xiaoxiang’s mistake was merely negligence. Punish her with a beating and reassign her to other tasks, or sell her off instead.”

“From what I understand, it’s bad luck for pregnant women to witness bloodshed,” Jiang Ruohua added, her voice measured. “Both Madam Yuan and Ying Yiniang are carrying children now. For the sake of my future brothers and sisters, let’s consider this an act of kindness and spare Xiaoxiang’s life.”

Before San Furen could respond, Jiang San Ye nodded in agreement. “Ruohua is right. With so few heirs in the third household, it’s best to cultivate blessings. It might help ensure Yuan bears me a son!”

“How thoughtful of you, Ruohua,” San Furen remarked with a forced smile. “Very well. Xiaoxiang will receive twenty lashes and be reassigned.”

With that, the matter was concluded. Jiang San Ye stayed to comfort Madam Yuan, while San Furen excused herself, citing other matters that needed her attention. Jiang Ruohua offered to accompany her.

“Aunt, you really frightened me today,” Jiang Ruohua said, playfully clinging to San Furen as they walked. “Thank goodness my little brother is still safe in Madam Yuan’s belly!”

San Furen felt like she had swallowed a bitter pill, but she had no choice but to feign kindness. “You handled everything so well today, Ruohua. I’m genuinely impressed!”

“Hehe,” Jiang Ruohua giggled like a child basking in praise. “I’m glad I could help you, Aunt!”

If San Furen felt disgusted by Jiang Ruohua’s words, she didn’t show it. Instead, she managed a strained smile before finding an excuse to dismiss her.

Everyone in the entourage could sense San Furen’s foul mood, but Jiang Ruohua remained blissfully unaware—or at least, pretended to.

After being dismissed, Jiang Ruohua remained unbothered. Beside her, Yinqiu grinned. “I couldn’t figure out why you had me rush to inform the Third Master earlier, but now I understand.”

“See? It’s all clear now, isn’t it?” Jiang Ruohua smiled. “The only time the Third Master and San Furen see eye to eye is when it involves their children.”

After all, Jiang San Ye, being both egotistical and male, naturally assumed his wife would handle everything seamlessly. He believed it was her duty to care for the household, manage his concubines, and even scheme against Jiang Ruohua—all because he was already doing his part by toiling “so hard” outside the home.

What a selfish man, utterly unreasonable, Jiang Ruohua thought with disdain. But she didn’t mind exploiting this dynamic. While the couple lacked genuine affection, any rift between them worked in her favor.

“You’re brilliant, Miss,” Yinqiu murmured. “If only San Furen had come, everything would have been resolved before the Third Master learned the full story. Only by involving him did San Furen’s shortcomings become evident.”

Marital discord was only the beginning. Future incidents would build on this foundation of dissatisfaction, turning today’s slight disharmony into tomorrow’s full-blown conflict.

“It’s true,” Jiang Ruohua said, her voice low and contemplative. “This wasn’t Ying Yiniang’s doing, though.”

Yinqiu hesitated. “You think not? It seems reckless… If she had the ability to enter the household, surely she isn’t foolish enough to make such a mistake?”

“Of course not. But someone has to take the blame,” Jiang Ruohua replied knowingly. “San Furen wouldn’t act so rashly, and Ying Yiniang isn’t stupid. But this incident cleverly draws attention to Madam Yuan as the victim.”

“Do you mean…?” Yinqiu began, her voice trailing off.

“Madam Yuan is currying favor with me,” Jiang Ruohua said softly, a sly smile tugging at her lips. “She’s gained her master’s sympathy and ensured greater protection. If anyone tries something next, they’ll need a foolproof plan.”
