Chapter 61
Shortly after the incident, Jiang Ruohua deduced that Madam Yuan had orchestrated it herself. As per their tacit agreement, Jiang Ruohua would ensure the safety of Madam Yuan and her child, while Madam Yuan would divert San Furen’s attention. What could capture San Furen’s focus more effectively than a child?
Madam Yuan had executed her plan skillfully. Not only did it secure her safety for an extended period, but it also fulfilled her promise to Jiang Ruohua. By attracting San Furen’s scrutiny and removing Ying Yiniang, the new favorite, Madam Yuan gained more time with Jiang San Ye. With some subtle persuasion during pillow talk, she was bound to enjoy a period of favor.
“Oh, right,” Jiang Ruohua added, as if casually, “From the candidates your parents helped select, pick two suitable ones to replace Xiaoju and Xiaoxiang. With our own people managing the medicine, there won’t be mistakes going forward.”
Yinqiu nodded. “Miss, rest assured. My father has been gathering information during his free time. Many of the candidates are descendants of the old retainers of the Marquis, or individuals with leverage against them. There aren’t many, but none would dare betray you.”
Jiang Ruohua nodded, silently thankful. She hadn’t discussed this directly with Old Master Gao, but it seemed he had coordinated efforts on her behalf. With the recent hiring of new staff, most of them should already be in place. She resolved to find time to thank him properly.
With a few loyal people on her side—some bound by loyalty and others by coercion—her strength was growing. She was one step closer to dismantling the disruptive forces of the third household!
At the same time, fulfilling her promise to Madam Yuan would require one more individual.
Pondering the matter, Jiang Ruohua lightly tapped her chin. The third household’s daughters were close in age, and Jiang Ruoqi would soon reach the age of engagement.
Considering suitable matches, Jiang Ruohua closed her eyes and thought deeply. The capital was brimming with noble families, but those who would consider Jiang Ruoqi’s background and possessed good character and rank were few and far between.
Still, there were opportunities. Jiang Ruohua could introduce Jiang Ruoqi to several potential matches. Whether she secured a good marriage would ultimately depend on Jiang Ruoqi herself.
Even if the matches weren’t perfect, Jiang Ruohua would ensure that Jiang Ruoqi avoided the disastrous fate her dream had shown her.
In that nightmare of a future, the marriages of the third household’s illegitimate daughters had been used as stepping stones for Jiang Ruoting’s ambitions. To strengthen connections and secure Jiang Ruoting’s place as the Princess Consort of the Yong King, these daughters had suffered horrendous fates.
Some were married off as secondary wives to Jiang San Ye’s contemporaries. Others were tied to libertines with numerous mistresses and illegitimate children. One was wedded to a seemingly respectable man who turned out to be an abusive drunkard.
The most tragic case was her fourth sister, Jiang Ruoyan, who married a sickly scion of a noble family. He died the day after their wedding, leaving her a widow. Blamed for bringing bad luck, she was treated as an outcast by her in-laws, who harassed her until she took her own life by drowning. Her death was so dishonorable that even burial in the family cemetery was denied.
No matter what, Jiang Ruohua couldn’t allow such horrors to unfold again. If her preferred matches didn’t work out, she could always seek her grandfather’s help to find a compatible family.
“Make arrangements for tomorrow,” Jiang Ruohua said. “We’ll go shopping for some items to send to the manor for the Princess.”
“Yes, Miss.” Yinqiu nodded.
The two strolled leisurely toward their small courtyard. The pathway was quiet, and few servants passed by. Jiang Ruohua’s keen senses alerted her to someone waiting nearby. She lowered her voice and instructed, “Stay behind and check the surroundings. Let me know if anyone else approaches.”
“Understood,” Yinqiu replied, falling back as Jiang Ruohua continued forward.
At the corner, a stout maid knelt suddenly at Jiang Ruohua’s feet with a loud thud.
“Thank you, Miss, for your great kindness! My daughter and I are eternally grateful!”
The plump maid, who had clearly been crying, began kowtowing fervently. Her voice was choked with emotion as she said, “If not for your mercy, Xiaoxiang would have been beaten to death. Thank you, Miss! Thank you!”
Jiang Ruohua raised an eyebrow and spoke calmly, “Your daughter was punished. If her wounds aren’t treated properly, her life may still be at risk.”
The maid, Xiaoxiang’s mother, looked up with tear-filled eyes. Despite holding a relatively influential position among the servants, she dared not openly protect her daughter. After a moment’s hesitation, she kowtowed again, pleading, “Miss, please save Xiaoxiang. From now on, my daughter and I will serve you loyally.”
She knew that it was unreasonable to expect a master to intervene for a servant who had made a mistake. Her only hope was Jiang Ruohua, the only person who could give her daughter a chance to live.
“Stand up,” Jiang Ruohua said coolly. “I will have someone send you high-quality medicine. If the wounds don’t become infected and scab over properly, she will survive. Use it on her.”
“Thank you, Miss! Thank you!” The maid’s gratitude was overflowing.
“However,” Jiang Ruohua continued, her tone sharp, “loyal servants serve only one master. Your daughter’s life may not mean much to me, but to you, it’s more precious than your own. A disloyal servant is nothing more than a liability—just like Xiaoju. Do you understand?”
The maid lowered her head, trembling, and nodded. “Miss is Xiaoxiang’s savior. I swear, even if it costs me my life, I will serve you faithfully.”
“Good.” Jiang Ruohua smiled faintly. “You should know that I am always fair. Those who serve well are rewarded generously.”
With this unexpected addition to her ranks, Jiang Ruohua now had another resource at her disposal. Although Xiaoxiang was clumsy, her mother was competent and worked in the kitchen—a position with access to many opportunities.
After the maid left via another path, Yinqiu caught up with Jiang Ruohua, pondering aloud, “Miss, isn’t that the mother of the maid punished earlier? I think she handles purchasing supplies for the household.”
“She does,” Jiang Ruohua confirmed, smiling. “It seems we’ve gained a useful ally.”
