Chapter 62

“Yes,” Jiang Ruohua nodded. “From now on, she’s one of ours.”

Yinqiu was surprised at first but quickly pieced together the reasoning. “Miss is truly clever, paying attention even to such minute details. This servant admires you.”

Hearing the praise, Jiang Ruohua sighed lightly. “It’s not so much cleverness as taking the opportunity to make a good impression among the servants. They need to know that the masters of this household can also be merciful—that we won’t destroy a servant’s life over trivial matters.”

Servants were still human, and a death sentence, even with a signed indenture, could provoke desperation. A cornered rabbit might still bite, after all. Managing servants required a balance of strict discipline and occasional kindness. Severe rules tempered with mercy ensured they stayed vigilant while remaining loyal and willing to serve wholeheartedly.

Her actions had been deliberate, seizing the opportunity to showcase her fair nature. First, she subtly leveraged Jiang San Ye’s authority to expose San Furen’s inadequacies. Then, she used the situation to build her own reputation, quietly swaying more of the household staff to her side.

Xiaoxiang’s mother had been an unexpected but welcome addition to her plans.

“Even so, you’re still incredible, Miss,” Yinqiu said, her smile genuine. “San Furen has always been so efficient, yet she stumbled on such a small matter this time. Now, Miss has benefited. I’m sure the servants will be whispering about it.”

It was a valid observation. However, Jiang Ruohua still lacked formal authority in this grand marquis’s estate. She wasn’t yet the one calling the shots.

But she wasn’t in a rush. One day, San Furen would lose the loyalty of the household staff. They would all defect to Jiang Ruohua, and the ugly faces of the third branch would be fully exposed, laid bare under the scorching sun for everyone to see.

Having taken Xiaoxiang and her mother under her wing, Jiang Ruohua wasn’t in a hurry to use them. A sharp blade was best reserved for the right moment; there was no need to act prematurely.

For now, Ying Yiniang was out of reach. San Furen would undoubtedly maintain appearances by caring for her well. However, when the time came to strike, her methods would be as ruthless as ever—perhaps an “accident” resulting in two lives lost or a conveniently sickly child who wouldn’t survive infancy. After all, even in the imperial family, not every child made it to adulthood.

The luckiest ones, like the third branch’s illegitimate daughters, might survive birth. If they were female, both mother and daughter might barely escape with their lives.

“Take a bottle of good medicine to Xiaoxiang and her mother later,” Jiang Ruohua instructed. “Be discreet, and make sure no one sees you. Remind them not to act rashly.”

“Yes, Miss.”

With this reminder, Jiang Ruohua began contemplating how to best utilize Ying Yiniang. The recent events had brought Ying Yiniang back into her awareness as a potential asset.

Jiang Ruohua’s memory lingered on the contemptuous remarks she had overheard from the household staff:

“A filthy woman from a brothel, playing the role of a loving sister? Hah! She’s tarnished the family’s reputation—what a disgrace! She’s nothing more than a plaything!”

Her face darkened, her fingers tightening around her wrist. The memory filled her with cold fury.

How many people in this world struggled endlessly in misery, just like her past self? Jiang Ruohua was haunted by the suffering she had witnessed in her dreams, knowing that not everyone was granted the chance to rewrite their fate.

Her grip on her wrist loosened as she exhaled deeply, forcing herself to calm down. She couldn’t change the world—not yet. Rationality kept her impulsiveness in check, and after a moment, she regained her composure.

The question remained: how could she reach Ying Yiniang?

“Over the next few days, prepare a set of men’s clothing for me,” Jiang Ruohua finally instructed. If she couldn’t wait for fate to deliver what she needed, she would go and retrieve it herself. She’d visit that place.

“Miss, what are you planning to do?” Yinqiu asked, startled.

“I’m going to a brothel,” Jiang Ruohua said flatly.

Yinqiu’s jaw dropped. She froze in shock, unable to process what she had just heard. A brothel? Was her mistress truly planning to go to such a place? After a moment, Yinqiu hurried to catch up, her expression filled with alarm.

“Miss, forgive me for speaking out of turn, but this servant must say something. Even if the Yong King deserves a thousand cuts, there are still good men in this world. You can’t give up on yourself like this!”

Jiang Ruohua: …

“…I didn’t explain clearly,” she finally said, exasperated. “What are you thinking? I’m just going to find someone.”

Yinqiu heaved a sigh of relief, but her earlier panic lingered.

Jiang Ruohua knew she would need to visit the brothel to make her plans work. Ying Yiniang’s connection could be utilized, but without Jiang Ruohua’s intervention, things might not progress as smoothly.

That evening, when Jiang Ruohua requested time off from Xu Weiqing, she ignited the man’s infamous temper. He erupted like a firecracker, hurling curses so harsh that even the usually composed Ah Yao’s eyes widened slightly under his mask.

Xu Weiqing rarely held back his rage, but this outburst was unparalleled. Every word was cutting, and he spared no one. His strikes were equally merciless.

Hu Xingxing, caught in the crossfire, cried out, “Jiang Ruohua, can you stop being so troublesome? You’re a woman! Why do you want to go to such a place? Now I’m getting beaten because of you!”

Jiang Ruohua pressed her lips together, unable to refute. But there was no changing her mind. Xu Weiqing could rage all he wanted; she had already made her decision.

By the end of the session, she handed Hu Xingxing some balm and a crushed piece of milk pastry as compensation.

Hu Xingxing accepted both items begrudgingly, her face puffed with indignation, but her spirits lifted as she ate.

Xu Weiqing could fume all he wanted; Jiang Ruohua remained unshaken. She had simply informed him of her plans, not sought his approval.

The matter was resolved to her satisfaction.

“Who would’ve thought?” Ah Yao murmured, leaning against the wall. Rarely did he speak, but this time he broke his silence. “Someone who can actually get Master to back down. Impressive.”

Jiang Ruohua smiled. “I hope you and Senior Sister can learn from this example.”

“I’d rather not,” Hu Xingxing interjected, shaking her head emphatically. “You can handle this kind of thing alone. I thought I was going to die today!”

Jiang Ruohua merely chuckled. Yes, she was going to the brothel, and no one—not even Xu Weiqing—could stop her.
