Chapter 66

Few women could resist the allure of Thousand Treasures Pavilion’s jewelry. Jiang Ruohua was no exception. Gold, silver, pearls, jade, precious stones, enamel, emerald feathers, and colored glass – the dazzling assortment started from the moment she walked through the door. Hairpins, headpieces, bejeweled tassels… there were so many that she hardly knew where to look first.

Jiang Ruohua admired a hairpin with interest. Its design, a delicate filigree butterfly with gemstone-encrusted wings that fluttered lightly, combined elegance and liveliness, making it perfect for a young lady. Though opulent, the piece exuded a gentle charm, just the right touch of understated luxury.

Liu Xiyun also glanced at the items on display, though not with particular enthusiasm. With an aunt in the palace, she already had more than enough jewelry bestowed upon her, so these items didn’t feel especially rare. However, a leisurely browse never hurt; who knew what unique trinket might catch her eye?

“What an exquisite butterfly hairpin,” Liu Xiyun remarked, noticing the piece in Jiang Ruohua’s hand. “The wings seem to quiver as if they’re real. Do you like it, Sister Hua?”

“I thought I’d buy one for my second sister and the girls back home,” Jiang Ruohua replied with a smile. “My second sister always did favor butterflies. What do you think, Sister Liu? Would it suit her?”

Technically, she didn’t lack such adornments herself, but appearances needed to be kept, and openly showing sisterly affection was always a good thing.

As expected, Liu Xiyun eagerly offered her opinion. “Jiang… Ting would love it, I’m sure. She absolutely adores butterflies!”

See? The plan was working. Jiang Ruohua smiled with satisfaction, planning to buy this butterfly pin. The next time Jiang Ruoting met with Liu Xiyun and the others, she’d certainly feel that pang of inadequacy.

Just then, she heard a murmur, her thoughts interrupted by a familiar voice filled with exasperation.

【Why is my rare day off being wasted shopping with Zhao, the fake lily? I just want to sleep! Let me sleep! Why can’t I sleep?!】

【This woman can shop endlessly, huh? Her strength’s back now, but this morning she could barely stand and kept stumbling into my arms. Funny how she’s full of energy the moment she starts spending my money!】

【It’s been days since I saw my wife. I need her beauty to soothe my wounded spirit…】

【Holy… I see her! I see my wife!】

Amused as she was, Jiang Ruohua quickly set these grumbling thoughts aside. But just as she looked up, confirming that the Prince of Ying was somewhere nearby, her path was suddenly blocked by a delicate hand. The gesture was accompanied by an unkindly voice.

“Lady Jiang, I want that butterfly hairpin. Might you be willing to let me have it?”

It had been a while since she’d last seen Zhao Yuexi. After that day at the teahouse, Jiang Ruohua hadn’t paid her much mind. Meeting Zhao Yuexi’s eyes, Jiang Ruohua noted the slight flash of nervousness before Zhao stiffened, seemingly encouraged by the prince’s presence. Evidently, Zhao had once again wormed her way into his good graces and returned to her old cocky self.

Liu Xiyun immediately grasped Jiang Ruohua’s hand with the hairpin, her expression cold as she retorted, “Miss Zhao, it seems you’ve abandoned all sense of decorum! Custom dictates that the first to lay claim has the right. Sister Hua held that hairpin first. You’re acting like some brute on a mountain, taking what you want.”

“It’s fine,” Jiang Ruohua replied lightly.

After all, it wasn’t for herself. Now that Zhao Yuexi had her sights set on it, Jiang Ruohua found herself reluctant to buy it. She smiled, sensing that their surroundings had quieted in response to Liu Xiyun’s sharp words. Those who could afford to shop at Thousand Treasures Pavilion were no ordinary folk; most present recognized them, and it seemed they were eagerly anticipating a show.

“Hua…” Liu Xiyun pouted slightly, clearly wanting to stand up for her.

Jiang Ruohua, however, didn’t rely on others to speak up on her behalf. If Zhao Yuexi came looking for trouble, she was fully prepared to respond. Zhao’s confidence was almost laughable. Yes, royal authority ruled the land, but it wasn’t something that couldn’t be challenged.

Jiang Ruohua was no mere insect, nor was Zhao Yuexi’s precious support some great tree.

【Can’t see me, can’t see me, can’t see me…】

Somewhere in the crowd, Luo Yu was trying his hardest not to be seen. His misery was palpable.

【Damn it, why did I have to run into her? Now her opinion of the original guy will tank even more!】

(Hmph, you were just saying how much you wanted to see the heroine, and now you’re complaining?) 【Back off! If that worked, I’d be chanting for stocks to soar every day. But the only thing that’s in the red is my phone battery! Why don’t those ever listen to me?!】

What nonsense was he muttering now? Jiang Ruohua ignored the absurd fragments and dismissed the rest. But the first comment—that he’d rather disappear—struck her as truly pathetic. Without his indulgence, would Zhao Yuexi ever have dared to provoke her, a Duke’s granddaughter? It was a joke! Now he wanted to act like a cowardly tortoise? Useless fool, sickening!

“Such a rare sight to see the prince and Miss Zhao so in sync,” Jiang Ruohua said with a smile, deliberately softening her tone. “Since Your Highness wishes to buy a hairpin for Miss Zhao, I can’t help but wish you both well.” She stepped forward and gently placed the butterfly pin in Zhao Yuexi’s hand. “Please, Miss Zhao, if you like it, consider it yours. No need to disrupt the peace over it.”

She spoke calmly, then took Liu Xiyun’s hand and prepared to leave. Noticing Zhao Yuexi’s expression of satisfaction, she added with a laugh, “Take it, then. There’s no need for formality. After all, the Jiang family is not lacking in such things, and we certainly don’t covet them. Farewell.”

【Huh? That’s it?】

The Prince of Ying seemed genuinely surprised, his thoughts echoing in a tone both resigned and embarrassed. Jiang Ruohua was accustomed to hearing this drivel by now, but she was, surprisingly, a bit disappointed in him. This self-pitying attitude was really beneath him.

“Pfft.” Liu Xiyun chuckled behind her fan, her voice low but far from quiet. “Hua, you’re absolutely right. Neither people nor objects matter much to a family of our standing. Why lower yourself to squabble over something so inconsequential?”

Jiang Ruohua loved hearing that. She smiled and nodded. “Exactly. It’s easy to lose face over a petty squabble, so why bother? It’s a perfect time for the theater. Let’s go listen to some music.”

This show of indifference was not only proof of her confidence but of how little she cared. To those watching her retreating figure, she seemed poised and graceful, her demeanor elegant and restrained. This was the true comportment of a well-bred lady.

In contrast, Zhao Yuexi’s covetous expression over a trivial trinket painted her as petty, graceless, and rather too much like a commoner—someone lacking in both restraint and decorum.

Zhao Yuexi held the hairpin in her hand, her face pale. It seemed as if all eyes were on her, judging her as someone unsophisticated and small-minded. She couldn’t understand why, even after the broken engagement, Jiang Ruohua could still be so poised, so composed, so unaffected.
