Chapter 39.1
“Zhao Yi, are you coming or not? If you don’t come today, I will never forgive you for the rest of my life.” Tian Tian had no other options. The situation was urgent, and this was her only way to force him to come.
Faced with his fiancée’s ultimatum, Zhao Yi was annoyed but suppressed his anger because she was someone he cared about. “Baobei, don’t be upset. I’m coming now.”
Tian Tian breathed a sigh of relief.
The two officers who had been persuading Zhao Yi also exhaled in relief.
“Hurry up. I’ll wait for you at the hospital entrance,” Tian Tian said.
Zhao Yi frowned in confusion. “Why are you at the hospital? Are you feeling unwell?”
“It’s complicated. Just come quickly,” Tian Tian urged.
Zhao Yi hummed in response and hung up the phone. He grabbed his suit jacket and walked out.
The two police officers followed him, contacting their colleagues on the hospital rooftop to report the latest update and instruct them to keep Wu Bo calm.
Hearing that Zhao Yi was on his way, Wu Bo’s emotions stabilized somewhat. However, he was still nervous and uneasy. “Will President Zhao agree to help me?”
The police officer gently reassured him, “He will. Don’t worry too much.”
Wu Bo shook his head. “No, he won’t. President Zhao is ruthless. He just wants me dead.”
“Stay calm. President Zhao is already on his way. You’ll see him soon, and he’ll talk to you himself.”
Wu Bo fell into a state of confusion.
After hanging up, Tian Tian rushed to the hospital entrance to wait for Zhao Yi’s car.
Zhao Yi arrived in a police car with sirens clearing the way. Within ten minutes, the car pulled up to the hospital entrance. Seeing Tian Tian standing there, Zhao Yi immediately called for the driver to stop.
“Baobei,” Zhao Yi said as he rolled down the window.
Tian Tian was overjoyed. “Don’t worry about me. Go and calm Wu Bo down first.”
Zhao Yi frowned, clearly unwilling to comfort Wu Bo.
The police officers, knowing Tian Tian’s influence, quickly invited her into the car as well.
When they arrived at the rooftop, the group headed straight for Wu Bo.
Although Zhao Yi cooperated throughout, his expression was impatient, and he exuded a complete lack of concern. Tian Tian noticed this, and a chill crept into her heart. She thought about the child growing in her womb. Was it the right time for this child to come? With a father as cold and unfeeling as Zhao Yi, could they have a good life?
While Zhao Yi’s unwillingness to save Wu Bo might have been understandable to some extent, the situation had escalated to a matter of life and death. Wu Bo’s son with a congenital heart condition was at the heart of the issue. The boy’s plight had struck a chord with the public, prompting widespread sympathy and the desperate urge to save both Wu Bo and his son.
Tian Tian was no exception. Upon learning the news, she had immediately felt compassion for the boy. Regardless of Wu Bo’s business dealings, he was undoubtedly a good father.
But Zhao Yi, even in such a situation, remained utterly unmoved. His cold-heartedness seemed ingrained, a product of his upbringing. Lacking love and harboring an innate desire for vengeance, Zhao Yi’s behavior could only grow more extreme over time. How could someone who didn’t understand love raise or nurture a child?
One of the police officers advised Zhao Yi, “President Zhao, please try to smile and speak in a gentle tone. The priority right now is to get Wu Bo down safely.”
Zhao Yi said nothing, remaining silent.
Tian Tian spoke up, “Zhao Yi, the officer is talking to you.”
It was only after Tian Tian’s prompting that Zhao Yi finally acknowledged the officer with a grunt.
The police were already at their wits’ end with this newly appointed chairman of Zhao Group, but they knew it was a small miracle that he had even come.
When Wu Bo saw Zhao Yi arrive, he became highly emotional, alternating between crying and pleading. The sight of a grown man kneeling on the rooftop in such a desperate state was utterly pitiful.
While Wu Bo had wavered earlier, Zhao Yi’s presence seemed to crush any lingering thoughts of suicide. After all, no one truly wants to die. Moreover, if Wu Bo died, his son would surely follow. As the boy cried uncontrollably nearby, Wu Bo’s heart ached. He had already sold his house and poured everything he had into his child’s treatment. His wife, unable to bear the immense pressure after he lost his job, had left him. Now, his only remaining connection to the world was his son.
The pitiful sight moved many onlookers, and even some viewers in the live stream began to cry.
Parental love knows no bounds.
Tian Tian’s eyes reddened as well. Carrying a child herself, she could now fully empathize with Wu Bo’s anguish.
But Zhao Yi remained unmoved, his cold gaze fixed on Wu Bo. If it weren’t for Tian Tian forcing him to come, he wouldn’t have bothered at all.
Seeing Zhao Yi’s lack of response, the police became increasingly anxious. One officer whispered to Zhao Yi, urging him to say something reassuring to get Wu Bo down.
Meanwhile, live stream viewers flooded the chat with calls for Zhao Yi to speak.
Tian Tian nudged Zhao Yi’s palm, her eyes signaling him to say something. “Say something! This is a matter of life and death.”
Reluctantly, Zhao Yi spoke. “Wu Bo, come down. I promise to lift your blacklist.”
Then, he pulled out his phone and, in full view of everyone, made a short call. After a brief exchange, he hung up. “Wu Bo, I’ve lifted your blacklist. Come down.”
Though Zhao Yi’s tone was cold and indifferent, the result was achieved. Wu Bo, knowing Zhao Yi’s personality, dared not expect more. Seeing this much was already miraculous. Slowly, he descended from the rooftop.
Everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.
With the matter resolved, Zhao Yi took Tian Tian home.
A car pulled up to pick them up, and the two sat in silence. Tian Tian’s expression was somber, and when Zhao Yi tried to pull her into his arms to comfort her, she pushed him away.
Zhao Yi’s face darkened. She had never rejected his affection before.
“Baobei, what’s wrong?”
Tian Tian turned to him, her face serious. “Zhao Yi, what does life mean to you?”
Though Zhao Yi had saved Wu Bo, it was clear that he had done so only because she had forced him. If she hadn’t intervened, Wu Bo might have died, and Zhao Yi wouldn’t have batted an eye.
Even now, Tian Tian couldn’t shake the chill in her heart. If this was only the beginning, how much worse could Zhao Yi’s indifference become?
Zhao Yi frowned. “Baobei, I did as you asked and saved Wu Bo. Why are you still harping on about this? Weren’t things fine between us before?”
Tian Tian stared at him, her voice trembling with frustration. “Do you think I’m just being difficult?”
“I did what you wanted. What else do you want from me? Even when the police came to Zhao Group, I didn’t budge. But the moment you called, I dropped everything and came here. Isn’t that enough?”
“Enough? Do you know what it means to value a human life? You treated this as nothing more than an inconvenience! If Wu Bo hadn’t had the will to live, he might already be dead!”
“Life and death are individual choices, not something I can control. I’m telling you now—if it weren’t for your call, I wouldn’t have come.”
Tian Tian’s anger surged. “Zhao Yi, you…”
The stress made her stomach ache slightly, and she was momentarily startled. After regaining her composure, she said, “Zhao Yi, I think we need to take some time apart.”
She decided not to tell him about the pregnancy for now. Their argument made her uncertain, and she needed time to think things through—especially whether Zhao Yi could ever be a suitable father.
Zhao Yi’s expression darkened. “Are you even hearing yourself, Tian Tian?”
“I know exactly what I’m saying.”
Zhao Yi’s face contorted with anger. “Over something as insignificant as Wu Bo, you’re making a big deal out of this?”
“Insignificant? Do you even understand what’s important in life?”
The tension between them grew unbearable. Zhao Yi abruptly ordered the driver to stop the car. “Take her home. I’m going to the office.”
He slammed the car door shut, leaving Tian Tian behind.
Back home, Tian Tian packed her belongings, her heart heavy. The more she thought about it, the more upset she became. She decided to return to her hometown, unable to stay here any longer.
When Zhao Yi came home the next evening, the house was empty. Tian Tian’s clothes were gone, and the suitcase she usually kept in the corner was missing.
Zhao Yi couldn’t help but curse.
Cheng Xiaobei, she actually left!
Just because of an outsider like Wu Bo, she got angry with him, broke up, and left!
He had already done as she asked and saved Wu Bo—what more did she want from him?
She said she needed “time alone,” but wasn’t that just another way of saying they were over?
Furious, Zhao Yi went to a bar and drank himself into a stupor.
Meanwhile, back in her hometown, Tian Tian’s parents noticed her low spirits and that she had returned alone. They assumed the two had broken up and wisely chose not to mention Zhao Yi.
They had only heard of Zhao Yi through Tian Tian over the phone and had never met him in person.
This time, Zhao Yi was truly angry. Cheng Xiaobei had left without a word, not even sending him a single message.
He was sulking, feeling wronged, and refused to go after her.
If she was so insistent on leaving, then so be it.
He was Zhao Yi, chairman of the Zhao Corporation and the richest man in D City. Did he really need to chase after a woman?
Tian Tian, on the other hand, settled comfortably in her hometown. A month passed, and her parents began noticing her frequent bouts of morning sickness and her slightly swollen belly. Finally, they couldn’t hold back anymore and asked, “Xiaobei, are you pregnant?”
Tian Tian nodded. “It should be about two months.”
Her parents were shocked. “Then what about Zhao Yi?”
Tian Tian replied, “We had an argument, so I came back to take some time to calm down.”
To her parents, this confirmed their belief that the two had broken up.
“Do you really plan to keep this baby? Xiaobei, you’re not even married. You shouldn’t have this child!”
“Since I’m already pregnant, I’ve decided to keep it,” Tian Tian said firmly.
Her parents continued to persuade her, but Tian Tian stood her ground. “Dad, Mom, Zhao Yi and I just had an argument; we haven’t broken up. We’re definitely keeping this baby.”
“Are you sure you haven’t broken up?” Tian Tian’s mother couldn’t help but ask.
“No,” Tian Tian said seriously. Whether it was for the sake of the task or her feelings, from the moment Zhao Yi firmly chose her, she had never thought of leaving him. This time, she had only come home to nurture her pregnancy and still planned to return afterward.
In the meantime, Tian Tian didn’t stay idle. The scenery in her hometown was picturesque, and one day, she filmed a video of herself making traditional lip rouge in a rural field. It unexpectedly went viral, amassing over 100 million views and more than a million likes—far surpassing the success of her earlier content as a sales assistant.
Realizing she had stumbled upon the secret to viral success, Tian Tian began focusing on making traditional rouge.
In her past life with Xu Mu, she had spent her entire life researching cosmetics. Though ancient techniques were less advanced, when it came to traditional rouge, no one could surpass her expertise.
Another month passed, and Tian Tian’s popularity on short video platforms skyrocketed. Her initial following of tens of thousands ballooned to over ten million within just a month.
Her videos were analyzed and praised by countless influencers, who cited her as a model of success and a miracle in the short video industry.
As her belly grew larger, shooting and production became increasingly strenuous. Fortunately, Cheng Feng, a local villager who had recently graduated and started a pig farm, often came over to lend a hand. He helped Tian Tian with whatever he could.
Tian Tian’s parents were pleased with Cheng Feng’s attentiveness. They felt he was showing interest in their daughter. After all, it had been three months, and Zhao Yi had yet to make an appearance. If that wasn’t a breakup, then what was?
Their daughter was foolish to think Zhao Yi would come looking for her.
In their eyes, Cheng Feng was a great match. Despite knowing Tian Tian was pregnant, he frequently came over to help and didn’t seem to mind her situation.
The two families lived close by, and though they shared the same surname, they were unrelated. Marriage would be entirely permissible and convenient for both families.
Meanwhile, Zhao Yi had poured all his energy into his business over the past three months. He had successfully purged Zhao Zhicheng’s faction, removing them entirely from the company. With the Zhao Corporation firmly in his grasp, Zhao Yi’s retaliation against Zhao Zhicheng and the middle-aged woman had left them completely subdued. Once arrogant and domineering, they now avoided him like the plague.
With his work finally under control, Zhao Yi’s thoughts drifted back to the woman who had cruelly left him. He had forced himself not to search for her, but when he stumbled across her traditional rouge videos, he found himself consumed by an uncontrollable longing.
Three months of suppressed yearning erupted like a flood, washing away all his reason. He admitted defeat—he couldn’t let go of Cheng Xiaobei in this lifetime.
He immediately had Lina book him a flight to Tian Tian’s hometown and set off without delay.
That day, Tian Tian needed to go to the nearby town to buy some supplies. Cheng Feng kindly offered to drive her.
“Xiaobei, you’re about four months along now, right?” Cheng Feng asked, unable to contain his curiosity.
Tian Tian nodded, gently rubbing her belly. Time had flown by.
“And the child’s father?” Cheng Feng hesitated before asking, “Are you two done?”
Tian Tian didn’t respond, silently gazing out the window. She was just as uncertain. The past three months had been like a cold war—neither of them had reached out. They felt like strangers. She had initially planned to return after three months, but her videos went viral, and she decided to seize the momentum. That’s why she hadn’t gone back yet.
But deep down, did she resent Zhao Yi? Of course, she did. She felt she had overestimated her importance to him.
Maybe he was giving her the cold shoulder out of spite, or maybe he already had another woman by his side. After all, in their past life, he had been indifferent toward the original host until her death.
“It’s a long story. Let’s not talk about him,” Tian Tian said, not wanting to mention Zhao Yi.
Cheng Feng nodded. “Alright.” He felt a pang of disappointment. He had hoped to use this conversation to confess his feelings, to tell her he was willing to take care of her and her child. But her reluctance to engage left him without the courage to proceed.
After all, he feared rejection.
Cheng Feng had always liked Tian Tian. They had grown distant during university, but seeing her again—pregnant yet still captivating—rekindled his feelings.
At the town, Tian Tian bought some of her favorite snacks, DHA supplements, and calcium tablets. Cheng Feng, ever attentive, carried her bags and made sure to shield her in crowded areas.
“Thank you,” Tian Tian said sincerely, appreciating his thoughtfulness.
Cheng Feng beamed. “It’s nothing.”
Tian Tian smiled back.
Just then, Zhao Yi arrived in a hurry. The first thing he saw was the two of them smiling at each other. The man, gentle and scholarly, was carrying several bags and shielding her protectively from passersby. The woman, visibly pregnant, still radiated beauty despite her swollen belly.
Zhao Yi froze, his mind going blank as his anger surged uncontrollably.
