Chapter 50.1

Gao Heng had been wrestling with the decision to kill Tian Tian over the past few days. She knew his true appearance, knew he wasn’t a eunuch, and wasn’t aligned with him in thought or intent. To safeguard his position, he believed she had to die.

Yet, when it came to actually giving the order, he found himself unable to do so. Now, upon hearing that she was ill, his heart twisted painfully, making him feel even worse.

That damned, vain woman!

Gao Heng felt a deep sense of helplessness.

Eunuch An couldn’t fathom what was on the Nine Thousand Years’ mind. Nervously, he spoke up, “Your Grace, shall we proceed with selecting a consort for tonight?”

Irritated by the news of Tian Tian’s illness, Gao Heng waved dismissively. “Take them away. I won’t summon anyone tonight.”

“Yes, Your Grace,” Eunuch An said, carefully removing the trays as he retreated.

Since her fallout with the “guard,” Tian Tian had been in low spirits. Her mood had hit rock bottom, and insomnia plagued her at night. To help herself sleep, she drank a cup of sweet wine before bed every evening.

Now, she had adopted a passive approach to life, waiting for a chance—a moment when she might meet the Nine Thousand Years.

She didn’t dare wander freely; her status didn’t permit such liberty. And as the Nine Thousand Years wasn’t someone she could simply decide to meet, she could only wait for the right opportunity.

In the original host’s memories, her first encounter with him had been during a sunset stroll in the garden. She had been standing amid the flowers, wearing a soft pink gown, her smile radiant as she admired the blooming blossoms. The golden light of dusk illuminated her, making her beauty stand out so brilliantly that the flowers seemed to pale in comparison.

It was at that moment that the Nine Thousand Years saw her, stunned by her breathtaking appearance. That very evening, he summoned her, beginning a short period of intense favor that tragically ended when she was made into a “beauty skin” painting.

That night, after drinking her usual cup of sweet wine, Tian Tian lay down to rest.

In the Thousand-Year Hall, Gao Heng wrestled with his emotions. Unable to suppress his feelings, he found himself drawn to Taihe Palace once again.

It was the dead of night, and Gao Heng assumed the vain woman would be asleep by now. He told himself he would only take a quick look to ensure she was fine.

Leaping onto the roof of her quarters, he removed a few tiles and peered inside. The faint glow of a single candle illuminated the room, and from his vantage point, he could clearly see the sleeping beauty on the bed.

She wore white undergarments, her dark hair fanned out over the pillow. The heat had caused her to kick the thin blanket to the side, revealing a pair of jade-like feet glowing softly in the candlelight.

Looking at her face, Gao Heng felt an inexplicable warmth in his chest. The frustration of the past few days seemed to melt away.

But after staring at her for a while, he noticed something unusual—her face was unusually flushed. Could she have a fever?

Concerned, he replaced the roof tiles and leaped down. Without hesitation, he pried open the window and entered her room to check.

A faint fragrance filled the air, sweet and distinctly hers.

Approaching the bed, Gao Heng noticed a faint scent of wine on her breath. He touched her forehead but found no signs of a fever.

It must have been the wine making her cheeks rosy. Relieved, he prepared to leave, but just as he turned, Tian Tian’s eyes fluttered open.

Their gazes locked.

Still groggy from the sweet wine, Tian Tian mistook the scene for a dream. She blinked at him, her beautiful eyes wide. “Why are you here again? Oh, that’s right—this must be a dream. In reality, you’d be too mad at me to come.”

Her voice was soft and slightly husky from sleep, carrying a sweetness that sent shivers down his spine.

Before Gao Heng could respond, she sat up and threw her arms around his waist.

She hugged him!

The vain woman actually hugged him!

Stunned, Gao Heng stood frozen in place, unable to move.

Tian Tian murmured, “To be honest, I do like you a little. It’s just a pity we can’t be together. I can only act this way in my dreams.”

Hearing this, Gao Heng turned and pulled her fully into his embrace.

“If you’re willing, we can be together forever,” he said softly, finally convinced that she had feelings for him.

Tian Tian was startled. Held tightly in his arms, she suddenly noticed the familiar scent of powder clinging to him. Her mind snapped to clarity.

This wasn’t a dream!

Dreams didn’t feel this real. Dreams didn’t have the scent of cosmetics.

Realizing what was happening, Tian Tian panicked and tried to wriggle free from his arms. “How dare you sneak into Taihe Palace in the dead of night! Let go of me!”

But Gao Heng didn’t let go. He held her gaze firmly and asked, “Is it so hard for you to admit that you care for me?”

Tian Tian froze for a moment, then sighed. “We can never be. I’m the Nine Thousand Years’ woman—always will be. Why risk your life for something with no future?”

Her voice softened. “I don’t want to see you lose your life over this.”

In that instant, Gao Heng understood. All the cruel words she had said before were meant to protect him.

“If you’re willing to be with me, nothing else matters,” he said earnestly.

Tian Tian sighed, her voice heavy with worry. “Leave. This isn’t a place you should be. If you’re discovered, you’ll die, and I’ll suffer the consequences too. Even if you don’t care about your own life, consider mine.”

Gao Heng didn’t take her warnings seriously. His spirits lifted as he held her slender waist tightly and leaned in to kiss her lips.

Tian Tian’s eyes flew wide open as she struggled against him. “Have you lost your mind?”

He didn’t linger, pulling away quickly. Smiling, he said, “No, I’m very clear-headed. Rest now. I’ll give you an answer soon.”

Before Tian Tian could respond, he slipped out the window and disappeared into the night.

Sitting on the bed, Tian Tian felt overwhelmed. What did the guard mean by giving her an “answer”? What answer could he possibly have?

Once again, sleep eluded her for the rest of the night.

The following morning, Eunuch An brought the tray of name plaques to the Thousand-Year Hall as usual. To everyone’s shock, Gao Heng chose Tian Tian’s plaque.

Eunuch An was momentarily stunned. Her plaque hadn’t even been on the tray! But as a shrewd man, he quickly realized that the Nine Thousand Years must hold a deep interest in this particular woman.

When Tian Tian received news that she was to attend to the Nine Thousand Years that night, she was utterly dumbfounded. She was still on sick leave! How could she have been selected? And hadn’t her plaque been removed by Lady Liu?

How could the Nine Thousand Years, who had never met her, suddenly summon her?

Could it have been the guard who did something to make this happen?

Tian Tian couldn’t figure it out, and neither could Lady Liu, who was so unsettled that she lost interest in applying her nail polish.

“How could the Nine Thousand Years summon Jiang Chan’s plaque when it had already been removed?”

Lady Liu’s maid replied, “Mistress, I heard that the Nine Thousand Years didn’t even look at the plaques. He specifically named Jiang Chan.”

Lady Liu’s face turned pale. Her hand twitched, causing the junior maid to accidentally smear the polish on her skin. The maid immediately dropped to her knees, trembling as she begged for forgiveness.

“This servant deserves to die. I will redo it for you, Mistress.”

Lady Liu frowned. “Get out.”

The young maid trembled and quickly fled the room.

“Mistress said to leave, didn’t you hear? You clumsy fool. You can’t even handle something as simple as this. I’ll do it myself,” the senior maid said, picking up the task.

As the junior maid retreated in fear, Lady Liu’s mind churned with unease. “Could it be that the Nine Thousand Years has already met Jiang Chan?”

“That seems unlikely,” the senior maid responded as she continued to paint her mistress’s nails. “Since Jiang Chan entered the High Palace, she’s never appeared before the Nine Thousand Years. He’s usually busy with state affairs and hasn’t stepped into the inner palace.”

Lady Liu felt even more confused. What had gone wrong?

“Mistress, you don’t need to worry. Jiang Chan has been punished for nearly half a month. Her body must be terribly weak by now. A woman’s beauty fades when she’s unwell. Even if the Nine Thousand Years does summon her, she won’t outshine you.”

Lady Liu nodded in agreement.

When Tian Tian learned she was to attend the Nine Thousand Years that evening, she immediately began preparing herself.

From the host’s memories, she knew that serving the Nine Thousand Years didn’t require sharing a bed with him. He was usually easygoing, and on occasion, he might simply ask to watch a dance.

The problem? She didn’t know how to dance!

Tian Tian was deeply worried. While the original host had been skilled in dancing, that wasn’t a talent she had inherited, despite possessing the memories.

She tried mimicking some of the moves but found her attempts laughable.

Dancing wasn’t an option. She would have to rely on improvisation.

That evening, because of Tian Tian’s summons, her dinner was delivered earlier than usual and consisted of light, refined dishes.

Tian Tian wasn’t picky about food. Given that the Nine Thousand Years wielded unparalleled power, the palace chefs were top-tier imperial cooks, and even the lightest fare was incredibly flavorful.

After finishing her meal, Eunuch An arrived with a team of maids and matrons to assist Tian Tian with bathing and dressing.
