Chapter 1
Ji Yang opened his eyes, and the first thing he saw was a woman’s fair and delicate face. She had willowy eyebrows, almond-shaped eyes, a well-shaped nose, and pink, glossy lips. Her dark, bright eyes shone with a hint of worry.
The two of them were lying together under the covers. She was snuggling up close to him, resting in his arms, her bangs damp with a fine layer of sweat. His hands gently circled her slender waist, both of them relaxed and open with each other.
The woman looked up, her soft, gentle voice reaching him, “A-Yang, is the company keeping you too busy? Is all the work falling on you?”
“Mm.” He answered casually, his voice low and husky. Then he closed his eyes, pretending to be exhausted, not wanting to give anything away.
“They’re bullying you.” Her words held a hint of annoyance. She stretched her fair, jade-like arms up around his head, drawing close to kiss him, her small lips pecking softly as she rested her forehead against his, pouting, “If it’s too much, you should just come to work at my dad’s company. I don’t believe Ji Wei is more capable than you; Father just favors him!”
Ji Yang hugged her and turned over, pulling the blanket up and holding her close. He kissed her smooth forehead, not wanting to talk too much, and his voice softened with a hint of reassurance, “It’s late. Let’s sleep.”
She bit her lower lip, worried he’d overthink things, and finally softened, “Don’t be mad. I just think it’s unfair to you. A-Yang, you’re amazing, and my father will see that.”
She couldn’t understand why there was such a big difference between the two sons. Her A-Yang worked so hard and still wasn’t acknowledged, while Ji Wei could effortlessly take credit for others’ achievements. Yet, her A-Yang was the rightful eldest son of the Ji family.
“I’m not mad.” He shook his head, giving her a gentle smile, his gaze soft.
“Then let me tell you something.” The woman looked up at him with a smile, her voice dragging out playfully, “My birthday party’s next week. Can you make some time to be with me for a day?”
As she spoke, her tone was hopeful but also slightly anxious. She knew how busy he was, so she tried to be considerate.
“Alright.” Ji Yang agreed without hesitation.
“You’re the best.” She kissed his chin, then snuggled in his arms, shyly saying, “Turn off the light; we should sleep. You have work tomorrow.”
“Mm.” Ji Yang reached out, turned off the light, and closed his eyes, continuing to absorb the memories.
He was a wandering soul, without a physical body, bound to a system that assigned him tasks, letting him experience various aspects of life. After each task was completed, the person who made the wish would give up their soul to keep the system running.
The woman in his arms was named Zheng Jiayue, the target of this mission. She was the only daughter of the wealthy Zheng family, in her final year at T City University. The Zheng family was neighbors with the Ji family, and the original host had grown up with Zheng Jiayue as childhood friends.
Unfortunately, although the original host was supposedly the only rightful heir of the Ji family, he actually had an older half-brother, born to his father’s girlfriend back in his hometown. His biological mother and Ji’s father were college classmates, but Ji’s father pretended to be single when he met and married Ji’s mother. This “phoenix man” climbed his way up, starting a business and amassing wealth, aided by the original host’s grandfather’s financial support. Tragically, the original host’s mother was frail and passed away from illness before he could even grow up.
So, Ji’s father brought his hometown “white moonlight” into the family and publicly declared her son, Ji Wei, as his “stepson,” though Ji Wei grew up spoiled and undisciplined.
The Zheng and Ji families had been planning a marriage arrangement since early on, and Zheng Jiayue had set her sights on the original host, following him around for over ten years. But the stepmother tried to interfere, wanting her own son to take his place. At age eighteen, Zheng Jiayue took matters into her own hands and confessed, winning Ji Yang’s heart.
Zheng Jiayue genuinely liked him. The proud and sometimes bratty young heiress was as docile as a kitten around him, doing his laundry, cooking, and cleaning his apartment, embodying the ideal wife.
And the original host? Lacking love since childhood, he adored her when they got together, always feeling guilty toward her and cherishing her, unable to bear seeing her hurt. He loved and indulged her, though some personal interests were also involved. As the only daughter of the Zheng family, Zheng Jiayue could provide valuable help in his career someday.
He also worked hard to prove himself within the Ji family, but the years of suppression left him deeply insecure. He longed for his father’s approval and also wanted to regain his mother and grandfather’s portion of the family wealth, yearning deeply for love and recognition.
They had been together for four years, deeply in love, inseparable.
According to the story, the original host’s abilities would be enough to surpass Ji Wei’s. Being an outstanding graduate and winning the shareholders’ favor, he’d take over Ji Corporation and marry Zheng Jiayue with great fanfare. The turning point came during Zheng Jiayue’s birthday party that year.
Midway through the party, after working overtime for days, he took a brief nap in a guest room, only to wake up next to Ning Wen, Jiayue’s roommate.
His first instinct was to keep it from Zheng Jiayue and handle it privately.
But Ning Wen got pregnant and insisted on having the baby. At the same time, Zheng Jiayue was also pregnant.
He tried to get Ning Wen to terminate her pregnancy, but she disappeared. When Zheng Jiayue reached her due date, she suffered an accident, resulting in a miscarriage and an inability to conceive again. She fell into depression and even attempted suicide.
Ning Wen reappeared with a young boy.
With Zheng Jiayue suffering from illness, losing her former strength, and Ning Wen raising his son with gentleness and understanding, the original host’s heart started to waver. He bought Ning Wen a house, and hearing the boy call him “Dad” softened his heart, leading to a secret relationship.
The child grew older, while Zheng Jiayue’s health declined. Her father suffered a stroke, and her mother became dispirited. The original host gained control over the Zheng family’s assets, and as he was preparing to send Jiayue abroad for treatment and arrange a comfortable life for Ning Wen and their son in the country, his car was struck by a falling boulder on the way home, killing him instantly.
As a vengeful spirit, he discovered the child was actually Ji Wei’s. Zheng Jiayue’s miscarriage was no accident. Both Ji Wei and his mother had plotted against him, with his own father’s help. Compared to him, Ji Wei had been raised by their grandparents, with their father’s full favor.
The original host’s maternal grandfather had often treated his father harshly, stirring resentment in a prideful “phoenix man” who felt humiliated. The original wife’s independence couldn’t compare to the devotion of his white moonlight. This man, arrogant and self-centered, resented seeing his wife’s family’s influence in their son.
The original host had secured the Zheng family’s fortune and strengthened the Ji family business, raising Ji Wei’s son. With his mission complete, Ji Wei became the real “winner in life,” in his words.
In the final memories, Ning Wen married Ji Wei, inheriting Ji Corporation, publicly adopting her son—her and Ji Wei’s child—and the whole family prospered, living a happy life off the Zheng family’s assets and the original host’s hard work.
“I want Ji Wei and Ning Wen to pay for what they’ve done!”
“I want my Jiayue to be safe, happy, and unhurt.”
The wish maker’s voice echoed in his mind, filled with hatred and turning gentle and remorseful at the mention of Zheng Jiayue.
“Memory transfer complete, initiating emotional bonding,” the system’s mechanical voice announced as Ji Yang felt his emotions shift.
Accepting the wish maker’s wish also meant accepting his memories and feelings, meaning he was now united with the original host. He would love what he loved and hate what he hated.
“Ding! Emotional bonding complete, mission commencement!”
Ji Yang opened his eyes, looking at the person in his arms with a soft, compassionate gaze, his heart full of love for her. He lowered his head, gently brushing his face against the top of her hair. Only this silly girl had ever truly cared for him.
“Mm…” Zheng Jiayue murmured drowsily, nuzzling against his neck, looking utterly reliant.
There was no future Zheng Jiayue’s miscarriage, no depression or suicide attempts, no carefully calculated intrusion by Ning Wen. At this moment, he loved her deeply, carefully shielding and cherishing her, genuinely treasuring her.
