Chapter 21
“Jiayue, I may not expect—may not expect you to respect me and Lao Ji too much, but as the daughter-in-law of the Ji family, you—you should… should…” Yin Rong stammered, struggling to finish her sentence.
“I am first Ji Yang’s wife and the mother of his child, and only then the Ji family’s daughter-in-law,” Zheng Jiayue interrupted firmly, cutting her off before she could continue.
Yin Rong’s face turned ashen with anger. She had no retort, and her voice faltered as she struggled to come up with a response. Her chest heaved in fury, blood rushing to her head as her eyes locked on Jiayue with a murderous glare, as if she could tear her apart.
“I’m not going back,” Ji Yang said, turning to Ji Father. His tone was icy cold as he spoke slowly and deliberately. “I will never go back. Ji Corporation is yours to handle now.”
Ji Father’s breath caught in his throat, almost choking. “Fine! You’re not coming back, huh? Then don’t ever think of coming back! From this day forward, I don’t have a son like you!”
This was his final card to play. He knew how much Ji Yang had always craved his approval.
“Fine. From now on, I have no connection to the Ji family,” Ji Yang replied calmly, each word clear and resolute.
Ji Father froze, his eyes widening in shock. Yet he couldn’t swallow his pride enough to say anything further.
Zheng Mother, who had been watching with growing irritation, finally burst out, yelling at the shameless couple to leave and stop disgracing themselves. She declared that Ji Yang was doing perfectly well in the Zheng household, and they should fend for themselves from now on.
Ji Father, ever concerned about appearances, snorted coldly and stormed off.
“We—wait for me!” Yin Rong, dragging her feet, hurried after him, only to receive a look of utter disdain from Ji Father as she followed.
Ji Yang’s public resignation sent ripples of panic through the company. Over the years, Ji Father had relied so heavily on him that his own skills had atrophied, leaving him struggling to keep up with the company’s modernization and reforms.
Then, Yin Rong was detained by the police over the attempted sabotage investigation, and Ji Corporation’s reputation took yet another hit.
When Ji Yang withdrew the gaming division he had established—without any contract restrictions—it was another heavy blow. Stockholders began dumping their shares, causing Ji Corporation’s stock price to hit rock bottom, plunging the company into a full-blown crisis.
Ji Father publicly blamed Ji Yang for the company’s downfall, but this backfired spectacularly. Netizens raged:
“Blaming your own son? He didn’t even take anything from you! How is the company’s bankruptcy his fault?”
“Do you just want to exploit him even more?”
“What a shameless family!”
Meanwhile, Yin Rong stubbornly denied plotting against Zheng Jiayue, but her words were garbled and unconvincing. The police, not one to be fooled, eventually got her to confess after two days of questioning.
Her confession revealed that she had conspired to cause Zheng Jiayue to miscarry, using Ning Wen’s child as a pawn to exploit the situation. The ultimate goal? To seize the Zheng family’s assets while making Ji Yang their workhorse.
A grand scheme, indeed.
Playing the devoted mother card, Yin Rong tried to protect Ji Wei. But the police weren’t easily swayed, and Ji Wei eventually confessed as well.
Ning Wen was sentenced first, followed shortly by Yin Rong and Ji Wei, receiving three- and five-year sentences respectively.
Not long after entering prison, Yin Rong suffered a stroke and was paroled on medical grounds. However, her condition left her half-paralyzed, and she spent the rest of her days bedridden in a hospital ICU.
Meanwhile, Ji Father hoarded all of Ji Yang’s relinquished shares, only to find himself drowning in debt. Ultimately, he disappeared without a trace, leaving his mess behind.
That same year, Ji Yang founded a new gaming company. His newly launched mobile games quickly gained popularity, and the company rose to prominence.
Demonstrating magnanimity, he arranged for caretakers to look after Ji Father and Yin Rong while placing Ning Wen’s child in an orphanage. This earned him widespread praise and further enhanced his company’s reputation.
Five years later.
“Guoguo, slow down! Mommy can’t keep up!”
A little boy toddled ahead enthusiastically, his short legs moving swiftly. Behind him, a fashionably dressed woman struggled to keep up, laughing.
The boy, however, only quickened his pace, giggling mischievously.
From a distance, a man watched the scene unfold, his gaze darkening with resentment. Quietly, he stepped to the side and picked up a brick.
It’s all Ji Yang’s fault their family was ruined!
“Guoguo, it’s time to go home.”
A little boy running ahead stopped at the sound of a man’s voice. He turned around with a bright smile and ran toward the man, his chubby little arms reaching up as he called out in his soft, babyish voice, “Daddy, Daddy, carry me!”
Ji Yang crouched down, scooped up his plump son with one arm, and held Zheng Jiayue’s hand with the other as they began to walk home.
Zheng Jiayue playfully pinched the little boy’s chubby cheeks and teased, “Mommy told you to slow down when you run. Were you not listening to Mommy?”
“I listen! Guoguo listens to Mommy!” The boy snuggled against Ji Yang’s chest, stretching his tiny hand open. “Guoguo listens to Mommy because Mommy will buy Guoguo five lollipops!”
Zheng Jiayue laughed. “Why so many? If Guoguo eats all that candy, your teeth will go bad.”
“No, they won’t! Guoguo can eat lots and lots and lots and lots and lots…”
Ji Yang chuckled, reaching out to rub the back of his son’s head.
Not far away, a man watched the family of three walking off, his eyes filled with unwillingness and hatred, turning bloodshot with rage.
In an urban village.
Filthy and disorganized, the narrow alleyways were thick with mud, and the air reeked of decay.
The man trudged to a leaky, decrepit house at the farthest end. He pushed the door open to reveal a messy, foul-smelling interior filled with the stench of alcohol. A bony old woman lay motionless on a shabby bed, while a man sprawled on a broken sofa.
“Water… water…” Yin Rong croaked weakly. She was now a complete invalid, unable to feed or bathe herself without assistance.
“Water? What water?” Ji Father sat up, reeking of alcohol, and glared at Ji Wei, who had just walked in. “Where’s the food? Didn’t you buy any food?”
“No.” Ji Wei walked further inside.
Since being released from prison, Ji Wei had returned to find Ji Father a penniless debtor with a pile of unpaid loans. His temper had grown more erratic, and Yin Rong, unable to afford treatment, was paralyzed and bedridden, dependent on others for every aspect of her care. The once-luxurious lifestyle seemed like a distant dream.
Upon hearing Ji Wei’s response, Ji Father launched into a torrent of curses, throwing objects in rage. Ji Wei retaliated, and soon, the two were grappling and brawling, neither willing to back down.
Yin Rong lay in bed, her useless body trembling with panic as she struggled to speak, her garbled cries of distress falling on deaf ears.
Before long, a group of debt collectors arrived, bursting into the house and unleashing violence. Their shouts and the sounds of blows filled the air. Yin Rong, unable to move, was kicked and slapped several times as collateral damage.
Ji Wei lost a hand in the brawl, had several ribs broken, and was left untreated due to a lack of money. Ji Father was beaten nearly to death, and Yin Rong ultimately starved to death in her bed.
Ning Wen fared no better. Returning to her rural hometown, she continued working in the flesh trade, seducing men and scheming to climb the social ladder. When she became pregnant and tried to force a man into marriage, she encountered a wife who wasn’t to be trifled with. The woman slapped Ning Wen hard enough to make her fall and miscarry. She was rushed to the hospital, where severe hemorrhaging necessitated the removal of her uterus.
The man quickly abandoned her, even helping his wife retaliate. Ning Wen ended up with nothing but a broken body, prematurely aged by over a decade, withered and haggard.
Her reputation ruined, the scandal spread throughout her small community. Shunned, she was reduced to begging food from old bachelors or vagrants. Eventually, she contracted AIDS and died, her body riddled with ulcers.
Meanwhile, Zheng Jiayue’s life was smooth sailing. She successfully developed her own brand and became a nationally renowned designer. Her husband rose to the billionaire rankings in middle age, and their son grew up filial and accomplished.
In her later years, lying on her bed, she clasped Ji Yang’s hand with tears streaming down her face. “Ah Yang, I’m sorry. This time, I have to leave you behind.”
“Don’t be afraid, Jiayue,” Ji Yang whispered, stroking her hair like a child’s. “I’m fine. I’ll join you soon.”
With a smile of happiness and contentment, Zheng Jiayue closed her eyes for the last time.
