Chapter 22
“Congratulations to the host for completing the mission. Reward: 200 points,” came the system’s mechanical, emotionless voice.
Ji Yang transformed once more into a drifting wisp of soul, floating in the void. He glanced toward the points store—his total points amounted to only 7,100. The cheapest “Pregnancy Preservation Pill” alone required 7,500 points. He couldn’t redeem anything.
“Option 1: Stay in the space.”
“Option 2: Accept another mission.”
The system’s reminder echoed again.
“Option 2,” Ji Yang’s voice floated in the air. What would be the point of staying in the space? Being alive and in a physical body was far more satisfying.
“Proceed to the Time Machine.”
The system issued a command, and a time portal in the right corner opened up.
“Transferring. Host, please prepare yourself. The reward for this mission is 500 points…”
In the blink of an eye, Ji Yang felt himself entering a physical body. Immediately, a pounding ache surged through his head, and his eyelids felt unbearably heavy. His entire head was weighted and swollen.
Suddenly, someone sat down beside him, very close. A faint but sharp perfume wafted into his nose, unpleasantly strong.
“Senior Ji, are you okay? Did you drink too much?” A soft, delicate female voice asked as a hand reached toward him, seemingly to massage his head. “Let me help you.”
“No need.” Ji Yang avoided the touch, lowering his head. He felt unbearably uncomfortable.
He had not yet received the memory of his host. They were in a private room with no one else around—just the two of them. He couldn’t yet determine their relationship.
Xu Wan’s hand froze mid-air for a moment, her displeasure flashing briefly before her expression returned to one of concern. She asked gently, “Senior Ji, can you walk? Let me help you; I’ll take you home.”
Staying in the room was not a good idea. Ji Yang nodded.
Xu Wan started driving while Ji Yang closed his eyes and began receiving the memories.
The original host was 27 years old and had won the prestigious International Golden Achievement Award at 20, setting a record as the youngest Chinese actor to achieve this honor. Known for his roles in crime and action films, he had recently returned to China and kept a low profile, rarely appearing in public or granting interviews. He had no social media presence and never interacted with fans.
With sharp, chiseled features and strikingly handsome looks, he exuded masculine charm. Yet, his reserved demeanor and “old-fashioned” style made him highly appealing. Despite his low-profile lifestyle, he attracted a massive fanbase of men and women alike. Fans speculated that if he ever opened a social media account, he would easily surpass all the younger male idols in popularity.
Xu Wan, in contrast, was a newly famous rising starlet—a graceful and elegant heiress of the Xu family. However, behind her classy facade, she was adept at seducing men.
Time and again, she had subtly and overtly flirted with the original host until he eventually took the bait. Just earlier, he had helped her secure the lead role in a film. The director couldn’t refuse his influence, and the host even agreed to make a guest appearance on the show.
According to the original plot, Xu Wan rose to stardom with his help, all while playing coy to keep him hooked. Ji Yang, like any man, developed a possessive interest and grew emotionally attached to her.
Xu Wan then leveraged him for publicity, skyrocketing her fame by dragging him onto reality shows and crafting a fake romantic narrative. In the end, however, they never ended up together. Once she ascended to the top as Best Actress, she abandoned him in favor of the wealthy Li family heir.
The original host’s downfall was tragic. The once-revered movie star ended up in prison, falsely accused of drug abuse and pedophilia. He became a public pariah due to Xu Wan’s fabricated allegations, and his fans turned on him viciously.
While in prison, he suffered unbearable humiliation, losing all his pride. The only thing that kept him going was Xu Ruier—a woman whose life was ruined because of him. She had once carried his twins, only to lose them in a miscarriage orchestrated by Xu Wan. Despite her disfigurement, she continued to visit him in prison with unwavering devotion.
Xu Wan’s mother had died early, and Xu Ruier’s mother—her stepmother—was married into the family later. Xu Ruier had been oppressed by Xu Wan since childhood.
When she met the original host abroad, she was a beautiful and sweet-natured graduate with a master’s degree in performing arts. Although she was much more talented than Xu Wan, her timid nature made her easy prey. The original host had used a little effort to win her over, enjoying her admiration and devotion.
She meticulously cared for him in every aspect of his life, and he had been satisfied with her obedience. But men often crave novelty, and Xu Wan’s flirtatious resistance intrigued him.
Thus, he allowed himself to be ensnared, leading to his tragic end.
The person making the wish was the original host’s mother, a university professor who was cared for by Xu Ruier in her old age until her passing. At the time, the original host was still in prison.
“I wish for my son to treat Ruier well and for the two of them to be happy together,” the elderly woman pleaded, her voice choking with emotion.
Ji Yang absorbed the feelings attached to the wish. The original host did have some affection for Xu Ruier—after all, she had given herself entirely to him. But her overwhelming admiration and submissiveness had made the original host take her for granted.
At the moment, the original host’s feelings for Xu Ruier were deeper than his passing interest in Xu Wan, making this task more manageable.
Ignoring the dull ache in his head, Ji Yang opened his eyes and reviewed the memories. In the current situation, the original host had already started paving the way for Xu Ruier’s career, and her reputation had grown significantly.
“Senior Ji, is there anyone at home to take care of you?” Xu Wan asked softly. “Should I make you some sobering soup?”
“No need, I’m fine,” Ji Yang responded indifferently.
“But you’re home alone,” Xu Wan insisted, her tone tinged with concern.
“There’s someone there,” Ji Yang replied.
Xu Wan knew Xu Ruier was living at Ji Yang’s house. Her reasons for approaching the original host were twofold: his status and the presence of Xu Ruier, who had been suppressed by her since childhood.
Even their birth mother had favored Xu Wan over Xu Ruier. The latter, unloved by both her father and mother, had also been relentlessly schemed against by her older sister.
And in the end, Xu Ruier’s life tragedy culminated with a scumbag man.
“Someone?” Xu Wan didn’t directly ask who it was, but her tone betrayed her curiosity.
That freeloading maid Xu Ruier?
Ji Yang had never publicly acknowledged her existence. In Xu Wan’s eyes, Xu Ruier was as pathetic and servile as her so-called “true love” of a mother.
“Yes,” Ji Yang said while massaging his temples. “My girlfriend is there.”
Xu Wan’s expression changed instantly. She stepped harder on the gas pedal, almost causing an accident. Ji Yang frowned sharply. “Focus on driving properly.”
“Sorry,” Xu Wan replied, her voice stiff and distant. After a moment, she spoke again, her tone filled with melancholy. “When did you get a girlfriend, Brother Ji? I thought you were single.”
They had been so ambiguous with each other. If he didn’t have feelings for her, why would he do so much for her?
Was it Xu Ruier?
Impossible!
She’d been freeloading as a maid for a whole year, and Ji Yang had never publicly acknowledged her. If Xu Wan hadn’t investigated, she wouldn’t even have known about it.
“To protect her,” Ji Yang replied calmly.
Xu Wan could barely contain her disbelief. She bit her lip so hard it nearly bled.
At the Shucheng Villa.
“Take it slow,” Xu Wan said as she parked the car and moved to support Ji Yang. He dodged her hand, saying, “I can stand on my own. I’m fine.”
Xu Wan smiled but didn’t retract her hand. “Are you trying to tough it out? Why not call your girlfriend out to help you? What if you fall?”
She thought this was just an excuse Ji Yang had come up with to provoke her.
Was he trying to make her submit faster?
“She’s asleep. I’ll go in by myself. Drive safely,” Ji Yang said as he staggered toward the door, though still steady enough.
“All right. Rest well, Senior Ji. Goodnight.” Xu Wan raised her voice as she glanced toward the second floor.
The curtains on the second floor shifted slightly, and her eyes filled with mockery.
Girlfriend? What girlfriend?
Xu Ruier didn’t deserve the title. In Xu Wan’s mind, Xu Ruier was destined to be trampled underfoot forever—mediocre, ignorant, timid, and cowardly.
