Chapter 6

Many guests had come expecting to see a spectacle of Zheng Jiayue being humiliated, but this sudden turn of events left them stunned. Ning Wen and her friends, watching the scene unfold, were so angry they could practically grit their teeth to dust.

Standing beside Ji Yang, Zheng Jiayue’s eyes were filled with tenderness as she softly asked him, “Do you want to go upstairs and rest for a bit?”

Ji Yang had been running around tirelessly these past few days for the Zheng Corporation’s bid, and he was undoubtedly exhausted.

“I am a bit tired,” Ji Yang admitted, showing a hint of fatigue. “I haven’t slept well these last few nights.”

“The banquet won’t end for a while, so go on up and rest, A-Yang. I’ll handle things down here.” As she spoke, she reached out to adjust his tie, noting the redness in his eyes. Her heart ached seeing how tired he was.

Before Ji Yang could respond, Ning Wen approached, holding a glass of red wine. She smiled and said, “Jiayue, it’s your birthday—I haven’t had a drink with you yet.”

Zheng Jiayue smiled back, reaching for a nearby wine glass, but Ji Yang took it instead. He raised the glass slightly toward Ning Wen. “Miss Ning, Jiayue isn’t great with alcohol. I’ll drink for her.”

With that, he downed the entire glass in one go.

Ning Wen hadn’t expected this, and her expression stiffened for a moment before she forced a smile. “Mr. Ji is truly devoted to Jiayue.”

She had heard about the events earlier in the evening. Ji Yang was undoubtedly a promising catch. Even if his company didn’t succeed, he would still accomplish great things.

Ji Yang responded with a faint smile and didn’t say more.

Standing close to Zheng Jiayue, he leaned down and kissed her on the forehead, whispering, “I’ll go rest upstairs for half an hour and come back down.”

Zheng Jiayue, ever considerate of him, said quickly, “A-Yang, you can rest in my room.”

“I’ll just go to the guest room. I just got back and am not exactly clean,” Ji Yang replied as he turned away. “Call me if you need anything.”

“I don’t mind at all,” Zheng Jiayue replied, her eyes sparkling with warmth.

He was always like this, afraid of inconveniencing her.

“He’s already walked off, and you’re still watching?” a few girls from before came over and teased her, saying, “Who would have thought Ji Yang would be so generous, giving you original shares?”

They joked, but their jealousy was evident. They had just been putting down Zheng Jiayue moments ago, and now here she was with a fiancé who had gifted her founding shares, the most valuable kind.

Zheng Jiayue smiled without responding.

She rarely spoke about her relationship with Ji Yang, let alone things like this. She accepted what he gave her, understanding he wanted to offer her a sense of security. He always did everything he could to treat her well.

“Ji Yang has always been that way with Jiayue,” Ning Wen added with a smile. “The property he owns is all in Jiayue’s name.”

This was what made her the most envious—if Ji Yang could be so devoted to Zheng Jiayue, he could be just as devoted to her. If she could secure a hold on this man, she would have everything.

The other girls’ jealousy grew, their smiles becoming increasingly strained, their gazes at Zheng Jiayue sharp with envy.

They had once thought Zheng Jiayue was foolish, but it seemed they were wrong. If they’d known Ji Yang was so easily controlled, they would have pursued him long ago. Only when property and shares were in your name did you truly have power!

“It’s just a name on a deed,” Zheng Jiayue said mildly, frowning slightly as she looked at Ning Wen’s innocent smile.

“Property is only appreciating these days,” one girl laughed. “Where is this property? Is it a villa?”

“It’s a villa by the sea,” Ning Wen interjected before Zheng Jiayue could answer, speaking with envy. “Over eight hundred square meters, with a private garden.”

Zheng Jiayue’s expression grew colder, especially as the group began asking questions about Ji Yang’s salary at Ji Corporation and inquiring about property values. Her protective instincts toward Ji Yang kicked in, and she deeply regretted ever letting Ning Wen pry any information out of her.

She might seem easygoing, but most of her thoughts were focused on herself and Ji Yang. She was too busy to bother with petty details. However, when it came to Ji Yang, she was instantly on high alert.

“It’s just one of the new developments Ji Corporation launched,” Zheng Jiayue replied in a dismissive tone. “It’s not worth much; land over there is pretty cheap.”

Ning Wen sneered inwardly. Cheap? In these times? Clearly, Zheng Jiayue was worried about Ji Yang becoming too desirable. But Ning Wen wasn’t about to make it easy for her, so she responded with feigned doubt, “Really? Isn’t the villa in the Sanwan area? Prices there have been going up.”

“Sanwan is on the outskirts, so even if prices rise, they won’t increase as fast as in the city.” Zheng Jiayue continued, “A-Yang said that investment was a loss, so he’s considering selling it soon.”

“Sanwan, huh?”

“Yeah, it’s still several tens of thousands per square meter, but not that impressive.”

The group continued chatting, and Ning Wen’s face went pale. She stayed silent, trying to fade into the background, looking embarrassed.

For her, tens of thousands per square meter was a huge figure, out of reach, but to these people, it wasn’t worth mentioning.

She had narrowly avoided exposing herself.

Just then, Ning Wen’s phone vibrated. Her eyes gleamed with barely suppressed excitement as she discreetly slipped away, heading upstairs. Whether it was the thrill or the heat, her heart was racing, and her face flushed.

She envisioned the life Ji Wei had promised her and the luxuries Ji Yang offered Zheng Jiayue, feeling as if she’d reached the pinnacle of success.

Following the room number on her phone, she stood before a door, pushed it open, and stepped inside. The room was dark, but she quickly spotted a man lying in bed, a smug smile spreading across her face.

Ji Yang was handsome. Sleeping with Zheng Jiayue’s man would make her the real winner. So what if they had a deep connection? She was confident she could gradually take advantage of the situation and make Zheng Jiayue taste true heartbreak.

As she approached the bed, her head felt increasingly foggy.

The room was filled with a sweet fragrance, and the man’s face grew blurrier and blurrier in her vision. But she couldn’t care less. Overcome with heat, she quickly slipped out of her clothes. Soon, she couldn’t hold back any longer, her consciousness fading, as she threw herself onto the man.

The man sleeping beside Ning Wen stirred, pulling her close with an urgency that surprised her. In her hazy state, she vaguely noticed he felt a bit chubby—not quite like Ji Yang. But the thought barely crossed her mind before her dazed passion pushed it away.

Feeling triumphant, Ning Wen grew bolder, indulging fully in the moment.

An hour and a half later, Ning Wen slowly woke up, her mind replaying her actions with a deep sense of satisfaction.

The sheets were in disarray, a clear sign of what had transpired. In her mind, Ji Yang must have fled out of fear. But what did that matter? It couldn’t change the fact that they had been together. Just imagining how furious Zheng Jiayue would be if she found out filled Ning Wen with glee.

Realizing the banquet was nearing its end, Ning Wen hurried to freshen up and headed downstairs.

“Ning Wen, where did you go?” Zheng Jiayue asked, looking puzzled.

“Oh? I felt a little tired and accidentally fell asleep in one of the guest rooms,” Ning Wen replied shyly, sneaking a glance at Ji Yang, who was now in a fresh change of clothes. He certainly had acted quickly.

“Why don’t you just stay here for the night? There are plenty of guest rooms,” Zheng Jiayue offered.

“Oh, I couldn’t impose,” Ning Wen murmured, biting her lip as her cheeks flushed.

What if Ji Yang came to find her in the middle of the night? After all, he had praised her figure earlier, clinging to her with such urgency that his voice had changed. It seemed he was growing tired of Zheng Jiayue.

Men are all the same, she thought smugly, believing her bedroom skills far outshined Zheng Jiayue’s.

Zheng Jiayue found Ning Wen’s reaction odd but didn’t think too much of it. Just then, a figure appeared at the entrance, and she went over to greet them immediately.

“Cousin!” she called.

The new arrival was Xu He, the niece on her mother’s side and a close friend. Xu He was a young actress, born with a silver spoon, doted on by two older brothers, and known for her temper and love of fashion. Dressed to perfection from head to toe, she looked every bit the wealthy socialite.

As she raised a smile, Xu He’s gaze landed on Ning Wen, and her expression shifted immediately. She narrowed her eyes, looking Ning Wen up and down before asking, “Where did you get that dress?”

Caught off guard as she was plotting how to further attract Ji Yang, Ning Wen froze.

“I asked, where did you get that dress?” Xu He repeated, stepping closer with a hint of anger in her voice.

“Cousin,” Zheng Jiayue tried to mediate, “she’s my roommate.”

“I know, which is exactly why I’m asking.” Xu He cast a sharp glance at her. “Where did you have this dress custom-made?”

“Cousin, it’s not a custom piece,” Zheng Jiayue said, thinking Xu He was simply displeased with Ning Wen and trying to keep things calm to avoid a scene.

“Of course, it’s custom-made—a 150,000 yuan custom order, right?” Xu He’s voice grew louder as she looked at Ning Wen. “Funny enough, I have the same dress custom-made for tomorrow night’s gala. It was supposed to be a one-of-a-kind piece. So why are you wearing it?”

Xu He’s first assumption was that Ning Wen had somehow used connections to steal her custom dress and dared to wear it to a party. If word got out, how could Xu He maintain her reputation? Furious, she wasn’t going to let this slide.

Zheng Jiayue was stunned. She had assumed Ning Wen had rented a dress. Could Ning Wen really afford custom-made, let alone a dress costing 150,000 yuan? It didn’t seem possible.

Ning Wen’s face turned ashen, her hands trembling slightly.

Xu He’s expression made it clear she wouldn’t let this go, and she pressed Ning Wen relentlessly. Glancing at the young socialites she had just been trying to impress, Ning Wen’s face grew even paler. She had just been talking herself up, pretending not to worry about money.
