Chapter 5

“Rest assured, Your Majesty, there is no one better at caring for others than I am.”

Hua Sijin, caught up in her enthusiasm, promptly lifted the blankets and clothes off Feng Juxu, pointing at the tiny needle marks on his body.

“See these? All my doing. Without them, who knows if he would have woken up.”

After speaking, she let go, allowing the clothes and blanket to fall back into place, and even patted Feng Juxu’s thigh.

“Move over, there’s plenty of room inside. I’m half off the bed, it’s unsafe.”

A bewildered Feng Juxu found himself pushed to the far side of the bed before he could react.

Hua Sijin warmly invited the Empress to take off her shoes and join them on the bed for a chat, her demeanor and tone resembling that of a bandit.

The Empress, despite her many years of grace and decorum in the palace, was originally from a military family. Hua Sijin’s behavior brought back memories of her own youthful days. She kicked off her shoes far and wide, sitting cross-legged opposite Hua Sijin, looking even more like a bandit herself.

Feng Juxu, feeling helpless, thought:

Well, my residence is still safe. It’s rare to see my mother so relaxed; a bit of freedom would do her good.

“You, girl, where did you learn such an extraordinary skill? Oh, and what about your family’s third daughter, the former Imperial Physician’s granddaughter? How is she now?”

The Empress, realizing her mistake mid-sentence, felt a pang of regret.

Oops! Isn’t this rubbing salt into a wound?

After the downfall of the Xia family, the Left Prime Minister demoted his legitimate wife to a concubine. The very daughter-in-law before her was the second legitimate daughter of the newly elevated concubine.

However, Hua Sijin, lost in the conversation, didn’t think much and waved her hand grandly, saying something that left the Empress stunned.

“I am the third daughter you mentioned. Now you can see how I’m doing.”

Silence.

A deathly silence.

Just as Feng Juxu was about to cough to break the tension, the Empress slapped her thigh and burst out.

“That damned scoundrel! I knew the Left Prime Minister was no good! What does the Xia family’s downfall have to do with an already married daughter with children!”

“If it weren’t for your rotten father’s actions, your mother wouldn’t have died in sorrow. Now he even dares to swap brides. Damned scoundrel!”

Hua Sijin joined in the cursing, matching the Empress’s fury, though mid-curse she realized something was amiss.

Wasn’t she the unfortunate one who was swapped?

Wasn’t the deceased Lady Xia her own mother?

So whose side should she be on? Why was she cursing herself?

The Empress regained her composure, taking Hua Sijin’s hand.

“Legitimate or not, you are a good woman for waking my son!”

Hua Sijin recognized this saying, akin to “It doesn’t matter if a cat is black or white, as long as it catches mice.”

“Since he married you as a legitimate daughter and the marriage rites were performed, you are now officially a legitimate daughter. In three days, when you visit your family, take my decree and deal with those shameless people!”

Pausing, the Empress pointed to her son, trapped on the bed.

“Will he be able to move in three days? If so, he should accompany you, to avoid any disrespectful treatment!”

Feng Juxu wondered if he was really his mother’s son.

Why did she seem to favor Hua Sijin, treating him as an unwanted son-in-law?

Hua Sijin, upon hearing this, became even more spirited.

“If I wish, he could be up and jumping in two days!”

The two women, finding a kindred spirit in each other, were ready to swear sisterhood if not for their statuses.

Hua Sijin, with sharp ears, heard footsteps outside and quickly jumped off the bed, retrieved the Empress’s thrown shoes, and helped her put them on.

The door opened, revealing the nanny who had accompanied the Empress, smiling with a tray holding two steaming bowls.

One was golden millet porridge, the other a black medicinal decoction.

“Leave it to me, nanny. You may go.”

Hua Sijin, recalling the Empress’s relaxed state earlier, wanted to maintain that joy.

Despite her rough demeanor, Hua Sijin had a considerate heart.

The nanny departed, and Hua Sijin, after observing and tasting the contents, declared,

“All good. Feng Juxu, time to eat!”

Seeing the weak man struggling to sit up, Hua Sijin felt a pang of disdain.

Earlier, she had to push him to move; no wonder he couldn’t get up. Truly a frail man, a constant trouble!

Unceremoniously, she handed the bowl to the Empress and easily lifted Feng Juxu, positioning him comfortably before feeding him a spoonful of porridge.

“Open your mouth.”

Feng Juxu, just opening his mouth, received a mouthful of porridge, slightly too hot, but not enough to burn.

“You’re a grown man, drink your porridge without fussing, hurry up!”

Never in his life had Feng Juxu felt so aggrieved. Yet, with Hua Sijin’s fierce demeanor and her medical expertise, he dared not risk his life defying her.

The Empress, initially stunned, watched as her son, now comfortably seated, finished a bowl of porridge in no time.

Before she could utter a sound, Hua Sijin placed the empty bowl back on the tray, then, lifting the tray with both bowls, exited the room.

When the Empress regained her senses, Hua Sijin had already returned, shoes off, sitting cross-legged opposite her son, who was now lying back with a plum in his mouth.

Hua Sijin, smiling at the Empress, caused her to clear her throat awkwardly.

“Um… Sijin?”

“I am here.”

“These years must have been tough on you.”

“Indeed, not just tough, but also unlucky. Hardly a full meal, often went hungry.”

The Empress: …

Feng Juxu: …

Seemingly recalling something, Hua Sijin exclaimed.

“Empress, when I visit my family in three days, may I settle some personal scores and leave you to clean up the mess?”

The Empress, ready to nod, suddenly hesitated, sensing a trap.
