Chapter 6

The two arrived in Hefei and headed straight to an inn.

The inn was located near the Namgung Clan’s residence.

Ilhwa took a warm bath first. It was only after washing herself thoroughly a couple of times that the stench and sticky feeling completely disappeared.

After changing into the clothes Seop Mu-Gwang had prepared, she went down to the first floor, where Seop Mu-Gwang was sitting at a table with his arms crossed, food laid out in front of him.

As she trudged down the stairs, his lips curved into a broad smile.

“Welcome! Kiddo, I made sure to order extra portions, so eat as much as you want!”

The table was full of dishes, mainly noodles and dumplings.

‘He said they were specialties.’

It’s just dumplings and noodles.

“…”

Ilhwa stood still, staring at the dumplings and noodles on the table without taking a seat.

As Seop Mu-Gwang pulled out a chair for her, he asked curiously,

“Why aren’t you sitting?”

“I had tanghulu earlier, so I don’t have much appetite.”

Despite her words, her face was filled with disappointment.

Seop Mu-Gwang blinked and, realizing her reaction a beat later, burst out laughing.

“Just sit down already! Ah, come on, sit!”

When Ilhwa finally took her seat, Seop Mu-Gwang placed a dumpling on her plate.

“What do you think is the most basic food served at an inn?”

“Dumplings and noodles.”

No matter which region you visit, it’s rare to find an inn that doesn’t serve dumplings or noodles.

They are the most basic items on the menu and, consequently, not particularly special.

“Exactly. But do you know how difficult it is to become famous for such basic dishes?”

As he tore open the dumpling skin, rich broth pooled onto the plate.

With practiced ease, Seop Mu-Gwang added a splash of clear soy sauce to the opened dumpling.

“People assume that because anyone can make it, it tastes the same no matter who makes it. But that’s not true. This place is known for dumplings that leave you feeling like you’ve glimpsed the afterlife after eating them.”

‘I’ve already seen the afterlife thanks to Daehwandan.’

Could these dumplings even compare to Daehwandan?

Well, Seop Mu-Gwang had never tasted Daehwandan, so his words made sense.

Seop Mu-Gwang put down his chopsticks, dusted off his hands, and smiled confidently.

“Go ahead, give it a try. You’ll be crying and begging for more.”

Reluctantly, Ilhwa picked up her spoon, cut a piece of dumpling skin, and carefully scooped a mix of the filling, broth, and soy sauce into her mouth.

At that moment, her eyes lit up.

“…!”

“How is it? Tasty, right? Isn’t it amazing?”

“…!”

Ilhwa unconsciously covered her mouth and chewed, staring at the dumpling.

To her surprise, the dumpling was incredibly delicious.

It was the best dumpling she’d ever had, even counting those from her past life.

The flavor, faithful to the basics, was rich with a hint of seafood, spreading its savory taste throughout her mouth.

Though it looked ordinary, the taste was extraordinary.

In the meantime, Seop Mu-Gwang served her some noodles as well.

After swallowing the dumpling, Ilhwa tasted the noodles and was once again amazed by the unexpected umami flavor.

Watching her devour the food, Seop Mu-Gwang laughed heartily and playfully ruffled her hair.

“Eat slowly. I’ll order as much as you want until you’re full.”

True to his word, Ilhwa ate dumplings and noodles until she felt like she would burst.

It was the first time she had ever felt this satisfied even after being so full.

The next morning, when she woke up, Seop Mu-Gwang was gone. The inn bill had already been settled.

Though Seop Mu-Gwang had disappeared, someone was tailing her. Judging by the familiar aura, it seemed to be one of his subordinates who had followed them to Hefei.

The purpose was likely to monitor and protect her.

Or perhaps to shadow her in case she chose a different path.

‘Either way, it doesn’t matter.’

Ilhwa left the inn and headed toward the Namgung Clan’s residence.
