Chapter 2
After finishing the bowl of noodles sent by Yao Cui, Yan Su’s stomach was barely half full.
He searched through the small house belonging to Cui Yang, gathering necessary documents and packing them into his backpack, then quietly waited for nightfall.
In this remote village, Yao Cui and Cui Zhiqiang, the couple, didn’t have any special activities at night. They watched a few episodes of anti-Japanese dramas and then turned off the lights to sleep.
At midnight, the westernmost room of the small courtyard in this village was quietly opened from the inside, and a figure sneaked out stealthily. It was Yan Su, taking advantage of the darkness to do his job.
Yan Su swiftly entered the main house where Yao Cui and Cui Zhiqiang were, found the keys from Cui Zhiqiang’s pocket, and opened the acceptance letter that had been locked in the box by him. Moonlight shone through the window, clearly illuminating a thick stack of pink bills at the bottom of the box.
This was the money Cui Zhiqiang had just taken a few days ago. He liked gambling, and this money wouldn’t last long before he lost it all.
Thinking of this, Yan Su didn’t hesitate to take the money. Since Cui Zhiqiang and Yao Cui weren’t going to report to the Qu family about Cui Yang taking a sum of money and leaving home, right?
Cui Yang absolutely didn’t have the guts for that. So let him confirm this matter.
As dawn broke, Yan Su got off the bus with his backpack and walked into the train station without hesitation. He bought a ticket directly to Fengjiang City.
Meanwhile, chaos had ensued at the Cui family’s home.
When Yao Cui went to bring breakfast to their adopted son, she was shocked to find that the house was empty, and Cui Yang, who had been tied to the bed, had already escaped. She immediately told Cui Zhiqiang about this.
Cui Zhiqiang anxiously opened the box to find the acceptance letter he had hidden, only to discover that along with the acceptance letter, the money he had just taken was also missing.
“That little brat dared to steal my money! Hurry up and find him back!” Cui Zhiqiang’s eyes were red with hatred and madness. He was addicted to gambling, and these days, he had been delayed because of Cui Yang’s matter. He had planned to use the money to satisfy his craving today, but who knew it had been stolen.
He turned around and saw Yao Cui standing there helplessly. A surge of violent impulse arose in his heart, and he kicked her in the abdomen.
“Ah—!” Yao Cui was caught off guard and fell to the ground, but she didn’t dare to resist. After exclaiming in shock, she quickly got up and ran out of the house to look for their adopted son.
After arriving in Fengjiang City, Yan Su spent a few days surveying the area and temporarily rented a house.
There was still a month before school started. He couldn’t just show up with the acceptance letter now. The money he took from the Cui family was enough for his university tuition and living expenses for a year.
Don’t be fooled by Cui Zhiqiang always complaining about being poor. In fact, he worked outside, and his annual income was enough for the family’s expenses. But because of his gambling addiction, he squandered all the money, so the Cui family was always the poorest in the village.
After settling down in Fengjiang City, Yan Su specifically investigated the situation of the Qu family.
Eighteen years ago, the Qu family was still a newly rich family, but after many years of hard work, the Qu family had already become one of the top-ranking wealthy families in Fengjiang City. The iconic shopping mall in the city center was one of the Qu family’s industries.
In order to learn more about the Qu family, Yan Su found a part-time job selling cosmetics in this shopping mall.
The eighteen-year-old young man looked refreshing and clean, tall and thin. With just a glance, he could attract the attention of many girls.
Taking advantage of his job, Yan Su learned from other mall employees that the Qu family now had two sons. The younger son, Qu Hongkai, was the family’s treasure, needless to say. Not long ago, when he turned eighteen, a grand birthday party was held for him at the city’s largest hotel, making it widely known throughout the city.
As for the eldest son of the Qu family, Qu Xiangrong, he was almost thirty years old. After graduating from university, he joined the family company and now held the position of general manager at the headquarters.
Qu Xiangrong was very capable at work. The Qu Group originally focused on real estate, but in the past few years, the real estate industry had been sluggish, and many companies suffered heavy losses due to transformation. Only the Qu Group, under Qu Xiangrong’s leadership, had undergone a splendid turnaround.
Since then, Qu Xiangrong’s position in the Qu Group had been unshakable.
“Speaking of which, this eldest son of the Qu family is handsome and capable. Although he married early, he is definitely a doting brother maniac!” A female colleague, only a few years older than Yan Su, mentioned Qu Xiangrong with a look of admiration, her eyes sparkling. “At Qu Hongkai’s eighteenth birthday party, he personally said that his brother will always be the most cherished person in his life, even if his wife and daughter together can’t compare.”
Yan Su raised an eyebrow. It was mentioned in the plot that Qu Xiangrong’s wife and he were college classmates, and they married shortly after graduation, giving birth to twin daughters.
But like Cui Yang, they were all cannon fodder, rarely mentioned in the plot. Of course, their ending was also tragic.
In a villa by the river in Fengjiang City, after coaxing the twin daughters to sleep, Wei Xuan walked into her husband’s study.
Her eyes were dim, and her face was somewhat haggard. The originally grayish expression suddenly burst into resentment when she saw Qu Xiangrong. She quickly approached him and demanded, “Qu Xiangrong, explain to me, what do you mean by giving half of your shares to Qu Hongkai? Have you ever considered me and our daughter?”
Qu Xiangrong was focused on his work at the computer when he was suddenly yelled at by his wife. He pinched his brow, and a trace of impatience appeared in his eyes.
How could he have been so stupid as to marry such a vulgar materialistic woman!
During their college days, he thought Wei Xuan, coming from an academic family, both her parents were university professors, her upbringing should be good, her character noble, and not fond of worldly possessions.
Who would have thought that after just a few years of marriage, she would turn out to be just like other women, fighting over property and shares in the family.
Before he could speak, Wei Xuan continued, “Before we got married, I knew you spoiled your younger brother, so when you said you were going to give up the shares and property owned by your mother, all to Qu Hongkai, I had no objection. But I didn’t expect that you would
treat Qu Hongkai better than your own son. As soon as he turned eighteen, you and your father each transferred half of your shares to him. Are you planning to let Qu Hongkai freeload for the rest of his life?”
Qu Xiangrong looked up, facing his wife’s furious face, and slowly exhaled, “Ah Xuan, we only have two daughters. You don’t plan on having more children. The Qu family’s wealth will eventually belong to Hongkai.”
With that, he stood up, regardless of Wei Xuan’s shocked expression, and approached her, saying softly, “I’m treating Hongkai better now. He will definitely take better care of our daughters in the future. Dad and mom never liked me anyway. Huanhuan and Yueyue are also two granddaughters. How can I make a living in this family if I don’t give in to Hongkai a bit? Think about it, isn’t that reasonable?”
Qu Xiangrong explained his painstaking efforts. He had thought Wei Xuan would understand. But little did he know that after listening to his reasoning, Wei Xuan was on the verge of going crazy.
She had known during their courtship that Qu Xiangrong, because of not being favored by his parents since childhood, had grown up in his grandparents’ home in the countryside, which had led to him developing a people-pleasing, self-sacrificing personality, but only for his family.
At that time, she felt sorry for him and vowed to use love to give Qu Xiangrong warmth, and to help him overcome the shadows of his childhood and develop a healthy personality.
But she didn’t expect that after a few years of marriage, she and her daughters together couldn’t even shake Qu Hongkai’s position in Qu Xiangrong’s heart.
Listening to what he said, what nonsense! Was this something a normal person could say?
This man was a prominent figure in the business world, but how did he become so spineless when facing his parents and brother?
Supporting her forehead with her hand, Wei Xuan felt that if she continued to communicate with Qu Xiangrong, she would definitely faint from anger.
She left the study like a wandering soul, deciding that she had to take her daughters back to her parents’ house for a while. She was fed up with living under the same roof as the Qu family, watching her husband favor his brother more than their daughters.
Without realizing it, a month had passed, and it was almost time for school to start. Yan Su resigned from his part-time job.
On September 1st, he arrived at Fengjiang University with his luggage and documents to register. Before he even set foot on campus, he heard exclamations from the crowd.
Following the gazes of the crowd, he saw a bright yellow sports car stopping at the school gate, and a well-dressed young man got out of the car.
Following closely behind the sports car was a black Bentley. Soon, a mature and stable-looking young man and a middle-aged couple got out of the Bentley. The middle-aged woman looked elegant and dignified, with a pearl necklace around her neck shining brightly in the sunlight, but her face was somewhat anxious at the moment.
Hastening a few steps to catch up with the young man, she took out a handkerchief to wipe the sweat from his forehead, affectionately saying, “Hongkai, drive slower next time. The speed you just went, scared your mom.”
This dazzling family was undoubtedly the Qu family.
Watching the Qu family couple and their eldest son fussing over Qu Hongkai, Yan Su smiled knowingly and walked into the campus.
