Chapter 62

Yan Su explained everything that Liao Jian’an had done to Jiao Cui, leaving nothing hidden. With Lu Weiqun, a strong-willed father, keeping a close watch, Liao Jian’an’s ugly schemes were bound to be exposed. Once he was cornered, it was likely he’d turn back to Jiao Cui for help.

After listening to the entire story, Jiao Cui slumped into a defeated state. She remained silent for a long time before finally saying, “So, you’re saying that Mr. Lu and Miss Lu have seen through Liao Jian’an’s tricks, and they’ll definitely kick him out of the company? It’s even possible he won’t be able to stay in Sen City anymore, right?”

Yan Su nodded.

Jiao Cui’s eyes reddened, and suddenly she burst into tears, clinging to Yan Su’s arm as she sobbed loudly: “Baohua, I always saw him as a deity, respected and feared him, feeling unworthy of his status as a college graduate. I even thought he might fall for beautiful, sophisticated city women someday. But for him to do something so vile and despicable—deceiving Miss Lu while hiding his married status—is worse than a shameless gold digger!”

Out of her deep reverence for educated people, Jiao Cui had always held Liao Jian’an in high regard. Even the idea of him being unfaithful outside the home seemed reasonable to her, as she felt she didn’t match his social status.

But Liao Jian’an currying favor with the Lu family to become their live-in son-in-law shattered her thick filter of admiration.

In her mind, educated individuals should be noble and above worldly matters. Yet, seeing Liao Jian’an grovel before the Lu family for wealth and power forced her to realize that being a college graduate wasn’t all that impressive.

Recalling the scene of Liao Jian’an’s mother coming to the Jiao family to propose marriage, she murmured, “I should have seen this coming. Four years ago, he was willing to lower himself to marry me just to attend college. Four years later, he would abandon me and Mao Mao for the Lu family’s riches. I could tolerate his shifting affections, but Mao Mao is his own son. Does he not care about him at all?”

Maple Tree Village was a relatively insular rural area where blood ties were paramount, making it hard for Jiao Cui to understand how Liao Jian’an could disregard his son.

After crying her heart out, Jiao Cui realized how foolish she had been for not agreeing to a divorce earlier. With someone as morally bankrupt as Liao Jian’an as Mao Mao’s father, she now worried that Mao Mao might be negatively influenced.

She expressed her desire to meet Lu Miaoliu in person.

When Yan Su informed Lu Miaoliu of this, she was surprised: “That black, chubby girl from your shop is Liao Jian’an’s wife from his hometown?”

“Yes, her name is Jiao Cui, the village chief’s daughter. She and Liao Jian’an have a son, Mao Mao, who’s already three years old,” Yan Su added, hesitating briefly before continuing, “She used to care deeply for Liao Jian’an, but after learning about his actions from me, she believes his character is flawed and wants to talk to you.”

Lu Miaoliu agreed without hesitation.

Jiao Cui entered the hospital room carrying a bouquet of flowers. She saw Lu Miaoliu lying weakly on the bed. The stark whiteness of the bedsheets and walls gave the room an empty, desolate atmosphere, making Lu Miaoliu appear lonely and pitiful.

The contrast with the generous Miss Lu who had purchased large quantities of grains and oils at the shop was stark.

The thought of Liao Jian’an deceiving such a girl caused an inexplicable pang in Jiao Cui’s heart, followed by a surge of anger toward him.

If Liao Jian’an had deceived older, more experienced wealthy women, it might have been forgivable. But to cheat a simple, kind-hearted girl of around twenty like Miss Lu—didn’t he feel any shame?

The more Jiao Cui thought about it, the guiltier she felt. She placed the flowers in the vase by the bedside and apologized with tears in her eyes: “I’m sorry, Miss Lu. I heard from Baohua about how Liao Jian’an deceived you. On his behalf, I want to apologize to you.”

Having seen the beautiful scene at Yan Su’s shop earlier, where Jiao Cui had also been present, Lu Miaoliu’s impression of her was quite positive. “Cui Cui, may I call you that? Liao Jian’an is Liao Jian’an, and you are you. His wrongdoings shouldn’t be your burden to bear. I heard from Brother Wei that you’ve given so much for Liao Jian’an—taking care of the child and supporting his mother back home. It must have been hard for you.”

Jiao Cui was taken aback. To her, caring for elders and children was just her duty as a daughter-in-law. She hadn’t expected Lu Miaoliu to specifically acknowledge her efforts.

She hurriedly shook her head. “It wasn’t hard; it’s what I should do as a wife. I thought that Liao Jian’an would be a strong and reliable man outside the home, but I didn’t expect…”

Sporting a handsome face yet conning others for money and relationships, nearly abandoning his wife and son—he truly was the worst of the worst.

Lu Miaoliu, having no emotional attachment to Liao Jian’an, didn’t care much about his deceit toward Lu Weiqun. She exchanged a few words with Jiao Cui before dozing off, exhausted.

Back at the shop, Jiao Cui told Yan Su that she wanted to return to her hometown and inform her father, Jiao Zhiwen, about everything.

Yan Su agreed, knowing that while Jiao Cui was young and naive, her father was sharp and protective of his daughter. If Jiao Zhiwen learned of Liao Jian’an’s actions, he wouldn’t let him off easily.

“Alright, Cui Cui, you can go back. Make sure to pass along a message to my parents and the elder Song family—tell them that Xiao Rong and I plan to get married, and ask them to come over to discuss the wedding arrangements. Here’s the address of Xiao Rong’s school.”

Jiao Cui suddenly remembered that Song Rong had graduated as well and was now at an age to marry Yan Su.

However, after seeing Liao Jian’an’s behavior, she had grown wary of college graduates. Hesitantly, she looked at Yan Su and said, “Xiao Rong and Liao Jian’an were classmates. What if she’s like him too…”

If someone like Liao Jian’an, a man, could be seduced by wealth and power, what about Song Rong? They had been close friends—did she know about his behavior, and if so, did she approve?

“Don’t worry. I know what I’m doing.” Yan Su understood her concerns and was pleased to see that she had learned to draw parallels and think critically.

After buying her a train ticket and seeing her off, Yan Su sought out Song Rong again five days later.

As soon as he entered her dormitory, he immediately lowered his head and apologized: “I’m sorry, Xiao Rong. Something urgent came up at the shop last time, and I left without telling you. I’m new to running a business and have encountered many challenges. Please understand.”

Just like Liao Jian’an, Song Rong didn’t take Yan Su’s claim of opening a shop seriously. She thought it was just an excuse for him to come to Sen City and marry her.

However, his sudden disappearance last time left her increasingly anxious, not knowing where to find him.

“Baohua, where is your shop? I waited for you for so long last time and couldn’t find you. I was worried sick! Do you not like me anymore?”

She pouted unhappily, unconsciously stroking her slightly rounded belly. Her three-month pregnancy bump was beginning to show. If she couldn’t quickly get him drunk and cover up the situation, her affair with another man while engaged would be exposed.

No matter how much Wei Baohua liked her, as a man, he surely wouldn’t tolerate wearing a green hat.

Song Rong had considered aborting the child, but the doctor warned her that due to her unique health condition, if she terminated this pregnancy, she might never be able to conceive again.

These past few days, she’d been anxious and even prepared several expensive bottles of wine, eagerly waiting for Yan Su to show up.

Yan Su quickly interrupted her, “Xiao Rong, don’t talk nonsense. Don’t you know my feelings for you? I said I’d show you the utmost respect. Since you’re in a hurry to get married, I’ve already invited both of our families from back home. They should arrive soon.”

Song Rong, full of calculations, was dumbfounded. “What did you say?”

At that moment, there was a knock on the dormitory door, followed by a loud voice shouting, “Xiao Rong, open the door! Your father and I are here!”

Hearing Yu Qin’s voice, Song Rong nearly fainted.

She knew her parents all too well—greedy, vain, and always trying to take advantage. When she wanted to attend college, they had hesitated because of the expense. But now that she’d graduated and could earn money, they wouldn’t hesitate to squeeze every penny from her.

Yu Qin and Song Wei being her parents was bad enough, but her eldest sister’s husband was even worse. He appeared honest but often manipulated her sister to stir up trouble in the family.

Trembling, she opened the door, and over a dozen people poured into her small single dorm, crowding it to capacity.

She looked closely and saw that, besides the Wei and Song family parents and her siblings, even her eldest brother-in-law’s family had come along. They were large, burly, and fierce-looking—like bandits.

“Xiao Rong, you’re a college graduate living so well in the city now. Don’t forget about your family,” said her brother-in-law’s mother, an even more troublesome woman than Yu Qin.

Song Rong stiffened, her face showing displeasure as she glanced at Yu Qin, silently blaming her for bringing so many people along.

But Yu Qin’s face was darker than she had expected.

Since her daughter graduated from college, Yu Qin hadn’t stopped bragging in the village. She’d say how Song Rong earned a lot in the city, was beautiful and elegant, and had many wealthy suitors eager to marry her.

Her intention was to make the Wei family anxious so they’d curry favor with her. But instead, her words had reached opportunists.

Those opportunists were none other than her eldest son-in-law’s family.

Song Rong’s eldest brother-in-law, Pan Lei, came from a poor family with many children—five sons and two daughters. Pan Lei, being the third child, couldn’t afford a bride, so he became a live-in son-in-law with the Song family.

Pan’s parents were even craftier than Yu Qin had imagined. Once they learned about Song Rong’s success, they decided to latch onto the Song family.

When Jiao Cui returned to Maple Tree Village and told the Song family that Song Rong was set to marry Wei Baohua, the news spread to the Pan family. Pan’s parents hurriedly brought their children along, shamelessly tagging along with Yu Qin and others to Sen City.

They had long coveted the Wei family’s wealth. The Wei family owned several grain and oil stores but only had Wei Baohua as an heir. Meanwhile, the Pan family had many children but no money. If Song Rong married Wei Baohua, the Pan family planned to demand that each of their children be given one of the Wei family’s stores.

“Xiao Rong, we heard you’re marrying Baohua. Why didn’t you discuss such a big matter with your parents?” Yu Qin glanced at Geng Xiuying nearby, swallowing the scolding she wanted to give her daughter.

Her daughter was a college graduate—how could she not know to raise her value and demand more bride price from the Wei family?

Even if the Wei family refused, as a college teacher, she’d have no trouble finding a good husband elsewhere. Didn’t the seafood magnate’s daughter-in-law also come from being a middle school teacher?

Song Rong knew her mother too well and could guess her thoughts.

But now she was cornered, with no choice but to marry Wei Baohua.

After entering the workforce, her perspective had broadened, and she no longer clung to Liao Jian’an as she had before. She had come to see him for what he was—a married man with children. Aside from his appearance and unprofitable talents, he had nothing to offer.

Yu Qin wanted her to marry a wealthy man, but rich men weren’t fools. Why would they marry her?

Her best card now was Wei Baohua.

With this realization, she calmed her mind and ushered the Pan family out of the dormitory, finding them a nearby hotel to stay in.

Then she returned to discuss the wedding plans with the Wei and Song family parents.

She was determined to seize this critical opportunity.
