Chapter 64
Song Rong had only recently moved into this office. To her colleagues, she was always gentle and serene, with a strikingly beautiful appearance. Not only was she well-regarded by her students, but she was also known for being helpful to her coworkers.
So when Mother Pan suddenly barged in and said those words, everyone found it quite surprising and turned their gazes toward Song Rong.
Song Rong froze momentarily. Her hands clenched tightly inside her sleeves as she tried to maintain the image of a gentle young teacher, though inwardly, she was seething with anger.
Offering her colleagues an apologetic smile, she helped Mother Pan, who was kneeling on the ground, and softly said, “Aunt Pan, how did you find your way here? If there’s something you need, let’s talk outside. Please don’t disturb my coworkers at work.”
Mother Pan had counted on Song Rong’s need to maintain her dignity in front of her colleagues, which is precisely why she had come. There was no way she would be coaxed away so easily.
Adopting the same brazen attitude she used when arguing back in the village, she clung to Song Rong’s sleeve, wailing and crying, painting herself as a pitiful rural woman. “Xiao Rong, before I came here, your Uncle Pan was already frothing at the mouth from his illness. Please lend me some money to deal with this emergency. Once we return to the village and sort things out, I promise to pay you back with interest.”
Mother Pan’s outburst drew the attention of the director from the neighboring office. Since Song Rong had only recently started her job, she couldn’t risk leaving a bad impression on her superiors. Without hesitation, she took out her freshly received salary and handed half of it to Mother Pan.
“Aunt Pan, take this money for Uncle Pan’s treatment. Your family has five sons to look after him, so he shouldn’t lack care. I still have to work, but I’ll visit Uncle Pan after I finish.”
Song Rong, too, was calculating. If Mother Pan wanted to play the victim, she would simply expose her hypocrisy.
After sending Mother Pan away, Song Rong was utterly exhausted. She gave a faint smile to the coworker across from her desk but suddenly felt a sharp pain in her lower abdomen.
Her eyelid twitched, and she was overcome with a sense of unease.
After work, instead of returning to her dorm, Song Rong went directly to the hospital where she had her prenatal check-ups. Worried about being recognized, she wore a mask, covering herself to avoid being noticed.
After a series of thorough examinations, the obstetrician solemnly informed her, “Your uterine wall is already thin. This pregnancy is ill-timed, and the fetus is unstable. Have you been overly stressed or busy at work? If this continues, not only will the fetus be at risk, but your own health will suffer significantly.”
The doctor suggested that she either quit her job and focus on resting at home or terminate the pregnancy. However, she warned, Song Rong’s chances of having another child in the future would be slim.
“I’ll think about it,” Song Rong replied, her face pale as she left the hospital.
When she returned to her dormitory, Yu Qin was nowhere to be found. Song Wei had taken out the bottles of alcohol Song Rong had prepared to intoxicate Wei Baohua earlier and was leisurely drinking. A few leftover peanuts sat on the table, and the room was filled with the stench of alcohol, making Song Rong frown.
“Xiao Rong, go buy me some side dishes to go with the liquor. Your father loves eating meat…” Song Wei hiccupped, the stench of alcohol wafting from his mouth.
The pungent smell triggered Song Rong, and the scene before her transported her back to her childhood in Maple Tree Village. Song Wei had always been this drunkard, snapping at her and her sisters whenever he ran out of money to buy alcohol.
After the Wei family sent the 1,000-yuan betrothal gift, Song Wei’s temper had improved considerably. Song Rong had thought their lives would return to peace, but now Song Wei was back to his old ways.
“Ugh!” She slammed the door shut and rushed to the corridor, bending over and retching, nearly vomiting bile.
Meanwhile, over the past few days, Geng Xiuying and Wei De had been dazzled by the sights and experiences their son had shown them in Forest City. However, as older folks, they didn’t have the energy to keep up with the constant excitement.
“Baohua, we’ve been putting off dealing with the Song family for days now. You and Xiao Rong’s marriage needs to be settled soon. If this drags on, I’ll always feel like there’s a weight on my chest,” said Geng Xiuying.
Previously, Geng Xiuying had thought that Song Rong was barely suitable for her son. But after her son had revealed half of his assets to her over the past few days, her standards for a daughter-in-law had soared.
What was Song Rong, really? With the troublesome relatives from the Song and Pan families, marrying her into the Wei family would bring endless problems. Her son had worked so hard to build his wealth, and it certainly wasn’t meant to help those hopelessly incompetent people.
Besides, the Wei family had provided a generous betrothal gift and funded Song Rong’s education. They owed her nothing. On the contrary, Song Rong often acted haughty and aloof, looking down on the “stink of money” on her son.
The family of three headed to Song Rong’s dormitory again. The door was wide open, and the Pan brothers were inside, causing a ruckus.
“Song Rong, you must go to the police station immediately and bail our father out. If you don’t, we’ll go to your office and make a scene. Let all your coworkers and your boss know that you’re unmarried and pregnant with another man’s child!”
Geng Xiuying and Wei De: “!!!”
The amount of information in that statement was overwhelming, leaving the couple momentarily unsure of what to process first.
“Old Pan is in the police station?”
“Song Rong is pregnant with another man’s child?”
Both voices sounded simultaneously. The two exchanged a glance and saw confusion and anger in each other’s eyes before turning sharply to Song Rong.
“Xiao Rong, explain yourself. What is going on?”
Overwhelmed by the Pan brothers’ noise, Song Rong looked up and saw the Wei family at the door. Her face turned pale as she froze, unsure how to respond.
The Pan brothers, emboldened by their perceived advantage, continued shouting but were silenced by a sharp reprimand from Geng Xiuying.
“Shut up! Song Rong, speak!”
Song Rong’s lips trembled, her eyes filled with despair, and her once-proud posture slumped.
The story began when Mother Pan had taken half of Song Rong’s monthly salary under the pretense of paying for Father Pan’s illness.
Father Pan was not ill at all. The money, once taken back, was immediately split and squandered by the Pan brothers. Song Rong’s salary was not high, so after they ate a meal and bought some cigarettes and alcohol, it was gone.
Finding the money easy to acquire, they returned to the hotel and continued pressuring Mother Pan to ask Song Rong for more.
However, Song Rong had taken sick leave and hadn’t gone to work, so Mother Pan came to her dormitory instead.
Song Rong resolutely refused to lend her more money, which led to a heated argument. Yu Qin and Song Wei also joined the fray, and the confrontation quickly devolved into mutual attacks targeting each other’s weaknesses. Amid the chaos, Mother Pan failed to obtain another cent from Song Rong.
Back at the hotel, Mother Pan and Father Pan lamented their situation.
That night, around two or three in the morning, Father Pan got up to use the restroom, located at the end of the hallway on their floor. After washing his hands and stepping out, he noticed that the door to a room opposite the staircase was wide open. The room was empty, but on the bed lay a large travel bag.
Overcome by greed, Father Pan glanced around to ensure no one was watching, then slipped inside and rummaged through the bag. To his delight, he found a thick stack of cash.
Ecstatic, Father Pan returned to his room, woke his wife, and the two of them counted the money several times to confirm their newfound fortune.
The next morning, he distributed the money among his sons, instructing them to spend it discreetly.
However, the Pan brothers, unaccustomed to wealth, began flaunting it, buying expensive items and even showing off to the hotel owner, who had previously looked down on them.
The hotel owner, distressed over a guest’s report of a large sum of money being stolen, immediately reported the suspicious behavior of the Pan brothers to the police.
Father Pan was soon arrested and confessed to the crime. Because the amount stolen was substantial, he was temporarily detained.
The Pan brothers were dumbfounded. Having never left Maple Village their entire lives, they were unfamiliar with the law and only now understood its implications. They sought out Song Rong, demanding she bail out their father.
Song Rong refused outright, and the confrontation escalated into a scuffle.
In the midst of this, Mother Pan noticed Song Rong instinctively protecting her abdomen, which was slightly protruding. Having given birth to seven children herself, Mother Pan was experienced and quickly deduced that Song Rong might be pregnant.
After returning to the hotel and thinking it over, Mother Pan concluded that the child could not be Wei Baohua’s. If it were, the Song family would have been eager to secure the marriage, and Yu Qin wouldn’t dare act so arrogantly toward Geng Xiuying.
The Pan brothers gleefully used this as leverage to threaten Song Rong once again.
Geng Xiuying was unconcerned about Father Pan’s imprisonment; her sole focus was on whether Song Rong was pregnant.
“Aunt Xiuying, I’m not! They’re just making baseless accusations. Mother Pan is slandering me!” Song Rong’s face flushed red as she stubbornly denied the claim.
If this matter were to spread, her reputation would be ruined, making it impossible to marry a good man. Worse, if she gave birth to the child and had to raise it alone, the mere thought of such a bleak future left her feeling hopeless.
Geng Xiuying stared at Song Rong’s abdomen for a long time before stepping forward and lifting her sweater to feel it. Her expression turned grim.
“Nowadays, a hospital check-up can confirm everything. Come with me to the hospital, and we’ll know for sure. If you’re not pregnant, I’ll personally apologize to you. But if you are…”
Her icy gaze was like a bottomless abyss, terrifying to behold. Song Rong shrank back in fear as Geng Xiuying continued, “Then you, Song Rong, and your family must return every cent and every item we’ve given you over the past four years!”
Yu Qin shuddered and hurriedly stepped forward to pull Geng Xiuying’s hand off Song Rong. “Geng Xiuying, what kind of nonsense are you spouting? My Xiao Rong has been engaged to Wei Baohua for years. If she’s pregnant, it could only be his child!”
Geng Xiuying’s eyes narrowed slightly as she glanced at Yan Su. Yan Su innocently shook his head. “Mom, you know me. I’m not the type to shirk responsibility. I haven’t even held her hand.”
“Bah!” Yu Qin spat angrily. “Wei Baohua, don’t think I don’t know. Ever since you were fifteen or sixteen, you’ve coveted my Xiao Rong. When you heard she was getting married, you eagerly offered a thousand yuan in betrothal gifts to propose. After being engaged for four years, you’re claiming you haven’t touched her? Who would believe that? Is there any man in this world as naive as you?”
She secretly pinched Song Rong, signaling her to speak up and cling to Wei Baohua to solidify the marriage.
Regardless of whether Song Rong was pregnant or whose child it was, she had to marry Wei Baohua.
Yu Qin was well aware of how disastrous it would be for a woman to lose her reputation in this era. If Song Rong’s lover were wealthier than Wei Baohua, they would have already broken off the engagement. This made it clear that she had likely been involved with a penniless man and ended up pregnant.
This realization filled Yu Qin with resentment. First, she blamed Song Rong for her poor judgment in choosing a man without wealth or influence.
Second, she resented Song Rong for not informing her about the pregnancy earlier, as she could have devised a plan. Now that the Wei family knew, it was impossible to cover up.
Geng Xiuying cast a cold glance at Yu Qin and turned back to Song Rong. “Come with me to the hospital for a check-up immediately. If you’re not pregnant, the engagement will proceed. But if you are, this marriage is off. My Baohua doesn’t need to spend his life alone just because of you!”
Song Rong’s face turned ashen. With one hand held tightly by Yu Qin and the other hanging limply at her side, she looked utterly defeated. Under the intense pressure from everyone, she fainted on the spot.
